For more than 20 years, A Touch of Gold has entertained Hawaii with Motown tunes and R&B favorites. From 6 to 11 p.m. next Friday they’ll be performing with friends at Don Ho’s to celebrate the release of their album, Reborn.
What started with five members in 1988 is now a sixman group with three of the original members, Michael Cobb, Frank Makaawaawa and William Makaawaawa.
Completing the group are members Taylor Hoopii, Keao Low and Bill Sapolu.
“We style ourselves largely after the Temptations,” says Cobb.“We believe not only in singing, but also in performing. We go out into the audience, get people involved and sing to people.”
Their new album, which is the group’s third recording, is what they call “Hawaiian Soul.“It features tracks Get Ready, Mustang Sally, I’ll Be Around, Ribbon In The Sky, Neither One Of Us, If I Give You My Heart, God Bless the USA, Stand By Me, Secret Garden, Reborn and A Song For Mama.
“On this recording, it really was about recording songs that we actually sing,” says Cobb.“The 2001 project (Local Hawaiian Girl) was largely doing originals, and we really didn’t do too much of what we do when we perform. We listened to our audience and what they want to hear.”
The album marks a grand accomplishment for the group as it took about two years to record, which Cobb says was because of their difficulty in finding the time to hit the studio.
“Each of us has full-time jobs and families, and we’re doing live shows, so somewhere in there we tried to get this recording done,” he adds.
To celebrate, they are inviting everyone to join them for a free night of music with groups such as Kapena, Rizon, Konfrontation, Braddah Sam and Harmony also taking the stage.

Chansons d’Amour
As the lingering perfume of Valentine’s Day fills the February air, Manoa Valley Theatre announces a red-hot romantic jazz performance perfect to jump start a week of romance.
The Hot Club of Hulaville, Hawaii’s favorite French gypsy jazz band, takes the stage with guests Monday, Feb. 9, and Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. to present Chansons d’Amour. It will be an intimate evening of romance, music and passion, as guests also can enjoy sweet and savory crepes cooked up by Le Crepe Cafe accompanied by a selection of French Champagnes.

“The Hot Club of Hulaville is more than a band, it is a celebration of musicians and fans who appreciate great jazz and style from the Continent and the Coasts, right here in Honolulu,” says Sonny Silva, founder, guitarist and vocal-ist of Hot Club of Hulaville.
Other musicians include Emmett Mahoney on guitar, David Chiorini on bass and Duane Padilla on violin - and rounding out the musical quartet is the fabulous voice of Ginai.
