Anuhea’s Release; Music In May

Anuhea’s self-titled creation, which includes 12 original tracks all written by her, was released yesterday. It’s been a long-awaited journey for Anuhea, but let’s just say it’s been worth the wait. The album is refreshing and down-to-earth with mainstream appeal. It is a great listen and I applaud Anuhea for stepping outside of the box.
Born and raised on Maui, Rylee Anuheake’alaokalokelani Jenkins remembers always being surrounded by music. Her aunty is the talented Nalani Choy of Na Leo. And having attended Kamehameha Schools, she says the song contest and chapel made music an integral part of her life. But it wasn’t until after her days at the Kapalama campus that she considered making music her career.
“I started off on Maui performing at coffee shops, just jamming, then restaurant gigs,” says Anuhea. “The climax of my Maui thing is I had this weekly show at this really popular place called Charley’s. So we played there for a year, and that helped me really develop my live performances and band. That’s kind of what helped to get me get signed.”
The album, which was recorded in L.A., is a lot about relationships and life - the good and the bad.
As Anuhea puts it, “It’s just trying to tell yourself to pursue your goals and not to give up. I even wrote a song about being a barista because when I was on Maui and waiting for the album I was working at a coffee shop. So it’s kind of a funky song about me being a barista and how I don’t want to be making coffee because I want to be playing music. It’s very real. I don’t make stuff up.”

She’ll be making the most of her time here, beginning with the Perry and Price Morning Show at John Dominis at 9 a.m., followed by an in-store performance at Best Buy Aiea at 2 p.m., and at 6 at Best Buy Honolulu. Some of Hawaii’s heavy hitters are teaming up to support Janell Araki and her fight with a rare disease called calciphylaxis. The Ohana Concert Fundraiser will include performances by Na Leo, Weldon Kekauoha, Maunalua, Vaihi, Kapena, Kupaoa, Natural Vibrations, Augie T. and many more.

Araki, who is the owner of Precision Sound, is described by her husband Darren as a perfectionist, as he points out her company’s name, but also giving and persistent, as her company is based on helping not only the entertainers but also the people who are in need of sound services.
“The concert is important to raise funds to help pay for her current and past medical bills, but also to bring awareness to diabetes, kidney disease and the rare disease calciphylaxis, in hopes that other people may become educated in not only the diseases but agencies they can turn to for help,” adds Darren.
The benefit concert is happening Sunday, May 3 at The Waterfront at the Aloha Tower Marketplace from 2 to 10 p.m. Tickets cost $20; free for children ages 12 and under ...
Also happening in May (May 10) is Hawaii Pacific Entertainment’s 2009 Mother’s Day Brunch With The Stars at JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa. Headed by HPE’s CEO Lincoln Jacobe, I attended this event last year, and it was fabulous. I especially loved the comedic performance by Da Braddahs, who will be back again this year. Joining them will be Camile Velasco, John Cruz, Henry Kapono and Yvonne Elliman, and emceeing will be the always hilarious Kaleo Pilanca.
“Our guests are going to rock out with legendary performer Henry Kapono, jam to the dark brooding hip-hop voice of Camile Velasco, and sway to the music of veteran vocalist Yvonne Elliman and the powerful prose of Hawaiian musician John Cruz,” says Jacobe. “This will be a unique and special event for every mom because of our great mix of entertainers and the diverse group of musical genres our guest will enjoy.”
Besides the great entertainment, 25 very special moms will be honored. And it’s not too late to get your mom on that prestigious list. Each of the Top 25 Moms of the Year winners will receive one complimentary admission to the event and will be recognized with a photo with the stars, a bouquet of flowers, as well as other great prizes including a manicure, makeup, pedicure and perfume gift certificates valued at $250. And the food? The menu includes field greens salad, grilled chicken teriyaki, fresh island catch, carved roasted kalua pig, seasonal fresh vegetables, fried rice, eggs, Portuguese sausage, bacon, breakfast pastries, desserts and more.
