Cecilio and Kapono present their annual concert and golf tournament

After performing for the first time together in February 1973, Cecilio & Kapono went on to sell out shows six nights a week at Waikiki’s Rainbow Villa for eight consecutive months. More than 35 years later, these guys are still bringing in the crowds.

Which is why it’s a good idea to get tickets now for their third annual concert series, “C&K Back in the Day” happening Sept. 3 and 4 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Great Lawn. Tickets went on sale last week Thursday, and if things go as they did the previous years, all are expected to sell.

Cecilio & Kapono will perform their extensive list of hit songs, bus’ a few jokes, bring in a few familiar friends in the business, and finish off the evening with a special fireworks show.

Not a bad deal for $37. Preferred seating, VIP packages and super VIP packages are also available. Tickets are available at HonoluluBoxOffice.com or 550-8457.

But before they take over the Hilton’s lawn, they’ll be at a grassy area a little further West - Hawaii Prince Golf Course in Ewa. Join Cecilio & Kapono for their second annual “C&K Back in the Day Golf Classic” on Aug. 31.

A portion of the proceeds from the concerts and from the golf tournament will benefit Keiki O Kai Aina Family Learning Centers, a nonprofit organization with a mission to build stronger communities by building stronger families. Cecilio & Kapono donated $23,000 to Keiki O Kai Aina in 2008 and $15,000 in 2009.

Good fun, good music, a good cause and Goodtimes Together ...

It’s all good for DJ Packo aka Kalani Pokipala. The 2002 Kealakehe High School grad just got back from a California tour with Creed Chameleon to promote the album Ultimatum.

I met Creed when I first moved here in 2004, and in 2008 we got together and started working and performing more together,” says Packo. “In 2009 we finally came together to push an actual product out (Ultimatum). I did the scratches for all the tracks and that’s what we’re performing now.”

Next up is a concert tomorrow (July 22) at The Waterfront at Aloha Tower with Black Star. Also on the bill are Goapele and Tassho Pearce.

Doors open 7 p.m. Tickets are available at groovetickets.com.

In the works is the second installment of Packo’s Aquadust (A Dubstep/Turntablism Mix). Packo plans to make a series of it and anticipates the follow-up album to be out by the end of this year.

“One of my inspirations for Aquadust is dubstep, a genre of electronic music which is fairly new, especially for Hawaii,” says Packo. “When most people think of electronic music it’s usually house or trance, but this one breaks it up so it’s basically half the tempo. Which brings me to my other inspiration, which is that I like to scratch. What dubstep brought to my attention is that there’s so much space between the beats and you can fill those spaces with all kinds of different sounds, like scratching.”

“This year the convention will take place in New York, and it will be nice to bring that wealth of experience back to the Hawaiian islands,” says Tom, who has performed with national acts Michael Winslow, Quest Crew and the Jabbawockeez, and local talents Makana, Kings of SpadeKamuela Kahoano, Pimpbot and Missing Dave, to name a few ...
