Tahiti Rey, the youngest daughter of local entertainer Augie Rey, gave an outstanding performance April 4 at the 12th annual Hawaii Music Awards held in Mamiya Theater at Chaminade University. The Castle grad performed Give Me Butterflies from her newly released album, Acoustic Beauty, which was awarded Best Pop Album. Rey also will make an appearance at 1 p.m. April 25 at the 34th annual Spring New Products Show at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
Kekoa Kaluhiwa, Kanai’a Nakamura and Kama Hopkins of the award-winning group Holunape performed a song off their album, Ahea? Ano!, which received the award for Best Hawaiian Album and honorable mention for Best Liner Notes. Taking home the win for Best Liner Notes, judged by our MidWeek editorial staff and presented by Kerry Miller and Carol Chang, was Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett for his album Honehone I Ka Poli. He graciously accepted the award, pointing out how appreciative he was that after many, many years writing liner notes on his albums that someone finally read them.
Our mahalo to Johnny Kai, executive director of the Hawaii Music Awards, for giving us the opportunity to judge that category.
The always lovely Tia Carrere also made an appearance. Carrere shared the award for Best Contemporary Hawaiian Album with Daniel Ho for their CD, ‘Ikena. And she also accepted the award for Ho for his win in the Folk category for his album Sunny Spaces.
Maui native Camile Velasco accepted her Best Single award for her remake of the Bob Marley classic Guava Jelly. She was accompanied by Hawaii Pacific Entertainment’s CEO Lincoln Jacobe, who is heading a Mother’s Day Brunch With The Stars at the Ihilani next month, which promises to be fabulous. More on that in next week’s column.

And making their first Hawaii Music Award appearance were two very talented middle school students, Arianne Yago of Maryknoll and Jasmin Idica of Kapolei Middle School. Yago and Idica were this year’s winners of the middle school division of Brown Bags To Stardom. There’s no question they both have very promising musical careers ahead of them.

Man, the guys of Holunape are everywhere. I saw them at the Kamehameha Ho’olaulea in February, then again at the Hawaii Music Awards, and for those who haven’t yet experienced it, they’re at Aku Bone Lounge from 7 to 9 every Tuesday night. And I also hear they’ll be performing at the Hawaii Theatre next month (May 3) for the Nahoalike concert, which celebrates Hawaiian music and hula. They have teamed up with Natalie Ai Kamauu, Howard Ai and kumu Karl Veto Baker and kumu Michael Casupang of the group Kumz.
“This concert is special to us because it incorporates a bunch of our talented friends whom we have come to admire over the years,” says Kaluhiwa. “Holunape has worked with Mike and Veto, performing with their halau at the Merrie Monarch in years past. In our younger days, we would hear Howard Ai singing at Merrie Monarch and be like, wow! And in 2006, when Holunape won Group of the Year (Na Hoku Hanohano Awards), Nat also won Female Vocalist of the Year. Our paths, whether through music or hula, always seemed to cross.”
