Cruz Tours Islands, DJs Battle AIDS

It was an endless summer of Mainland gigs, but John Cruz is back home to embark on a tour of the Islands throughout November and December.
“I haven’t done a statewide tour in a while, so it was about time,” says Cruz. “I’ve been playing on the Mainland a lot, so whenever I’m back, I run into people and they ask when I’ll be performing here. So I’m just trying to make myself more accessible.”
Shows will feature Cruz with a small band including Frank Carillo on bass and a few surprise guests on each island.
His Oahu stop is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Jimmy Buffett‘s at the Beachcomber. Tickets cost $20 general admission, $45 for adults with dinner/$25 for kids under 12 with dinner. For reservations, call 791-1200.
“I haven’t been to Jimmy Buffett’s and this will be the first time performing there, so I’m curious about that venue,” says Cruz. “I’ll be playing stuff off my two previous albums, as well as stuff that will be on my third album.”
Album No. 3 is in the preproduction stage. He is currently writing new songs and finishing the arrangements on others that have been in his collection for some time. After his Hawaii tour, he plans to head back to the studio to begin recording.
“It will be similar to my first two records where I’ll be writing about half the material,” says Cruz, who says he’s hoping for a summer release. “I let the songs dictate what’s going to happen because it all starts with the songs. But I do know that this album will be more of an acoustic vibe like my first record was.”

DJ Maxx, Hanu, Mr. Nick, Quiksilva, KSM, Alex, BBTF, Raf, Ikon, Daniel K, G-Spot, Vegas Mike, Matt Kee, PSI, Scarrd, Tide, Errick, Trancis, Jaegurl, Bushmaster, Miki Mayham and Soundsex are teaming up next week Thursday (Dec. 3) for the 15th annual DJs Against AIDS at Hula’s Bar & Lei Stand, and Friday (Dec. 4) at The Warehouse.
The event benefits the Life Foundation, an Oahu-based, nonprofit organization that fights AIDS in Hawaii and the Pacific. Its mission: to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS and to empower those affected by HIV and AIDS, and maximize their quality of life.
Thursday night’s 21-andover event from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. is followed up by Friday’s all-ages rager from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Hawaii Theatre kicks off the holiday season with a special return presentation of “A Merry Christmas with Friends & Nabors.” Jim Nabors‘immensely popular concert is happening Friday, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Nov. 29.
Nabors, who last presented the show in 2006, returns with a new lineup featuring guest stars Jimmy Borges, Phillip Huber & The Huber Marionettes, Karen Keawehawai’i, Guy Merola, Emma Veary, Matt Catingub, Hawaii Theatre Orchestra, La Pietra Select Choir and the Hawaii Theatre Ensemble Singers (George Benevente, Katie Doyle, Cathy Foy-Mahi, Lea Woods Friedman, Tricia Marciel, Matthew Pennaz, Elitei Tatafu and Jimi Wheeler).
And the Sugarplums will dance with Snowbird Bento‘s halau Ka Pa Hula Ka Lei Lehua and the Diamond Head Theatre Shooting Stars singing, marching and tapping.
The cast of more than 100 will bring the holidays to life with renditions of the season’s favorite and inspirational songs.
Tickets are on sale now at Hawaii Theatre and start from $25. Shows are Nov. 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. A special military preview performance at a reduced price is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m.

Here’s a Web site worth checking out. PlayHawaiianMusic.com is an online community of people who are passionate about Hawaiian music. Most of its members, 194 and counting, are musicians who play ukulele and guitar. It’s a source for Hawaiian music videos, photos, events, articles and more. The Web site was launched in July and new content is added every week.
Its mission: To promote and preserve Hawaiian music.
“PlayHawaiianMusic.com is a great source of knowledge and information, and another terrific thing is that a lot of the members get together to kanikapila,” says Tyler Zane, born and raised Oahu boy and owner of PlayHawaiianMusic.com. “A lot of people like to play Hawaiian music but have no one to play with. It’s easy to hook up with someone through the Web site if you want to kanikapila, whether it’s here on Oahu or on the Mainland.”
