Fab 4 Finale: a Hollywood Concert this Saturday

Sometimes goodbyes are reasons to celebrate, especially when friendships continue, good memories are cherished and positive opportunities await.

It seems that the group Fab 4 and I share more than just this column this week. After seven years with MidWeek, this Friday I will take a final bow as associate editor. I will be leaving my full-time position with the company to spend more time with my 7- and 4-year-old daughters while continuing to write this column.

The members of Fab 4, Janel Akana from Kaneohe, Kea Davis-Milo from Waimanalo, Brandon Kahele from Hauula and Frank Villanueva from Pearl City, also will be taking a final bow this week after seven years of performing together. To celebrate their time together and the journey that lies ahead, they’re having a Fab 4 Finale: A Hollywood Concert this Saturday at Oceans 808.

“We wanted to do a concert because the group has decided to go our separate ways,” says Kahele. “I’m actually moving to California, and Janel and Kea are starting their own groups. When I announced I was moving, we got together and I encouraged them to replace me, but they felt that we should move on.”

The foursome met in 2003 at an audition for the TV show Hawaii Stars. Since then their schedules have been stacked with live gigs, including the 2007 Mai Tai Rumble, which they won.

“I think one of the things I’ll miss the most is the chemistry we had,” adds Kahele. “No matter what was going, the four of us always contributed something unique to the group. From backyard parties to big concerts, we will miss it all dearly.”

Joining Fab 4 for its final farewell concert are Hoku Zuttermeister, Lehua Kalima, Believe, Na Maka O Pu’uwai Aloha and more. Tickets cost $20 presale and $25 at the door. Door prizes will include hotel stays, designer bags, jewelry, a Hawaiian bracelet, Nintendo Wii and an iPad, to name a few. A portion of ticket sales will benefit the Wish To Hear Foundation.

“We really believe in what the Wish To Hear Foundation stands for because they help a lot of children,” says Kahele. “We’re all grateful for our hearing so we can pursue music, and are happy to support an organization that helps kids with hearing loss.”

Eight0eight’s Wes Aoki, Carl Fidel, NJ Chang-Gottschalk, Scott Shafer, Malcolm Rolsal, Riya Davis and Tony Trevias

A concert of a different sort also is happening this Friday at Gordon Biersch. Hawaii’s very own R&B/funk band Eight0eight presents its 10th anniversary celebration.

For this special night, current members Scott Shafer (drums), Tony Trevias (keyboards), Carl Fidel (bass), Wes Aoki (guitar), Riya Davis (vocals), NJ Gottschalk (vocals) and Malcolm Rolsal (vocals) will be joined on stage by original members Stephanie Dillard (vocals), Lisa-Maria Priester (vocals), Patrick Sweeney (key-boards), Eric Folk (drums) and Dale Horton (bass).

That’s going to be one busy stage.

Hosted by KUMU radio personality Mandy Suganuma, the evening promises to be high energy, showcasing the wide array of talent that has come through this multi-faceted band.

The show is from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. For reservations, call the restaurant at 599-4877 ...

Paul Hannah, a Kaneohe boy gone West Coast, released another album last week, No Segregation. The album, which he says “is a statement,” features tracks with messages of hope, unity, humanity and peace.

‘No Segregation’ is a statement of hope, unity and peace

“The music is mainly saying that we the people are here to work and be together,” says Hannah, who currently resides in San Diego. “There’s a song about Harriet Tubman, describing her and her journey out of captivity, and another song written days after the Haiti earthquake about the boy Kiki, who was under the rubble for eight days.”

For this album, Hannah invited a few guest musicians to accompany him on the tracks, including Rob Thorson (upright bass), Bill Lamden (bassoon), Cindy Antoun (back-ground vocals), Steve Normand (violin) and Sotos (lead guitar).

“This gave more flavor to the album and also opened my eyes to the beauty of working with other musicians,” adds Hannah.
