The father-sons trio ManoaDNA and their holiday helpers are transforming Kani Ka Pila Grille into a winter workshop Dec. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. as they host their second annual Boys &Their Toys Drive benefiting Lokahi Giving Project and Oahu Marines Toys For Tots. Lloyd, Nick and Alex Kawakami hope this year’s event will surpass the toys they collected last year.
“We have always been supporting Hawaii charities with our music, and last year we wanted to go further,” says Nick. “At the last minute we decided to hold an impromptu toy drive to help support the donation efforts during the holidays. We were overwhelmed by the response we got, being that it was last-minute, and were very encouraged to do it again this year.”
Joining in the effort, Kani Ka Pila Grille is offering a special deal to those who donate any new and unwrapped toy. Bring a donation and Kani Ka Pila Grille will give you a token to extend the happy hour menu prices normally available from 3 to 6 p.m.
“Last year we donated a dozen trash bags full of toys,” says Alex. “This year, with a lot more planning, we hope to get twice that amount and really help Hawaii’s families.”
To ensure that this happens, ManoaDNA also is accepting donations anytime before Dec. 11 at IOLANI sportswear, located at 1234 Kona St.
All donations collected will be given directly to charities including the Lokahi Giving Project and Oahu Marines Toys For Tots, and into the hands of Hawaii’s children.

After their duties as Santa’s helpers are through, Lloyd, Nick and Alex will join a talented lineup of musicians for a holiday concert series, Na Lei Makana, Dec. 17 and 18 at Queen Kapiolani Hotel.
In partnership with Waipuna Entertainment, Queen Kapiolani Hotel celebrates the holidays with its signature buffet and two award-winning lineups. On Friday, it’s Holunape, ManoaDNA and Natalie Ai Kamauu. Saturday, Waipuna and Halau O Na Pua Kukui, Mailani Makainai and Weldon Kekauoha take the stage.
“We’re honored to be a part of such a star-studded lineup,” says Kekoa Kaluhiwa of Holunape. “We’ve performed with ManoaDNAand Nat a number of times, and we always have so much fun. It’ll be a great mix of both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music.”

John Koko, Jerome Koko and Moon Kauakahi, this year’s recipients of the Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award, will share their award-winning music Dec. 22 at Pagoda Hotel’s International Ballroom.

Great news for Hawaii Opera Theater fans and Honolulu Symphony musicians: Karen Tiller, HOT executive director, and Brien Matson, president of the Musician’s Association of Hawaii, announced that the union’s professional musicians will again be in the orchestra pit for the coming opera season:
“Hawaii Opera Theatre patrons have been deeply supportive of the orchestra musicians, and we are ever grateful for the ongoing donations which enable us to hire these talented local professionals for our opera season. We have a long history of hiring the symphony musicians for the Grand Opera Season orchestra, and we are so fortunate to continue this tradition of upholding the highest artistic standards that our audience has come to expect.”
Representing the musicians throughout negotiations was James Moffitt, clarinetist, who says, “Our award-winning musicians are delighted to perform again at the Blaisdell Concert Hall for a live audience. It has been challenging to endure difficulties both financially and artistically from cancelled concerts. We are thrilled to be playing for our patrons and for the opera season. I personally love the music!”
HOT launches the 2011 season with Faust by Charles Gounod, Jan. 28, 30 and Feb 1. Next is Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Feb. 11, 13 and 15. Finally, Verdi’s La Traviata, Feb. 25, 27 and March 1.
