Jimmy Da Geek, Pugal Are Back

Brace yourselves, Hawaii, because Jimmy Da Geek, former Honolulu radio DJ and one of the members of The 3 Local Boyz, is back in action with a new CD that has choke kine hilarious parodies. Jimmy and the Boyz had Hawaii rolling with laughter in the late ‘80s with remixes such as Me So Hungry (parody of The 2 Live Crew‘s Me So Horny) and Rice Rice Baybee (parody of Vanilla Ice‘s Ice Ice Baby). This time around Jimmy is back with Make A, an album that features his longtime friend Kutmaster Spaz and the always hilarious Augie T.
“I wrote all of the songs except for Local Boy Haole Boy, which was by Augie and myself,” says Jimmy. “Spaz and I worked together on the bits, which usually are just ad-libbed off of an outline.”
The track list, which is available for download at http://www.hawaiitunes.com, includes Random Things, Make A, Spam For Men, Love Dem Local Girlz, Criminal Stopper, The Hello Kitty Song, Family Argument, Put Li Hing, Chicken Nut Bread, Talk Like A Pinoy, Differences and Local Boy Haole Boy.
“Make A is gonna be hot because we all can relate to the subject matter. Who hasn’t had something stuck in their teeth while talking to people, or things like that?” says Jimmy, an ‘87 Kalaheo High graduate. “Local Boy Haole Boy will be a good one because it features Augie T. and I going back and forth making fun of each other.”
My personal favorites are Love Dem Local Girlz (and not just because he gives my hometown Hilo a shout out) and also Talk Like A Pinoy. Both had me cracking up.
The album is scheduled to be in Hawaii stores by the end of this month. Go check um, go check um go ...
Happening on the more-serious side of music: The Honolulu Symphony welcomes music lovers of all ages to its first-ever Symphony Fair happening Saturday at the Waikiki Shell.
The fair will feature nearly 20 musical performing groups from all over Oahu, a petting zoo hosted by the Honolulu Symphony musicians, food concession stands, face painting, sign painting and other fun activities.
Among the groups scheduled to perform are Hawaii Suzuki Strings, Na Mele o Suzuki, Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, Hawaii Youth Symphony, Iolani School, Mass Horn Choir from the International Horn Society and featured jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. And making an appearance will be ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro from noon to 1 p.m., and local jazz favorite Jimmy Borges from noon to 3 p.m.

“We felt it was important to find a way to show the extent to which the symphony is involved in the whole community,” said Tom Gulick, executive director. “The symphony contributes in many ways, both as an organization and through its individual members, to music programs in the schools and community groups” ...
Aiea’s Ryan Pugal has built up quite a schedule since the online release of his album JukeBox45.
“Over 600 people have already pre-ordered a copy online,” says Pugal, who is pursuing music full time after 11 years in the business. “I also have an in-store release set for early August. I’m actually going to be touring at the malls throughout Hawaii in August.”
The release is an up-close-and-personal follow-up to his first album, This Is Me The Demo Project, which he described as having an international style and sound.
“No doubt, this is my best material yet so far,” says Pugal. “This new album is so more me and my style and just a tease of what I have yet to come out with.”
The 14-track album is the final product from what Pugal says started with more than 80 songs he wrote and recorded. After some narrowing down, Pugal is confident that it has a little something for everyone: funky, original, pop, R&B, dance, smooth, hip-hop and love jams.
