Natural Vibes’ CD Of Original Favorites

The people have spoken and Natural Vibrations has listened.
This week marks the release of the group’s most-requested, most-downloaded and most-loved songs. The album, Ultimate Vibes: The Best Of Natural Vibrations, is a 17-track collection of 15 original favorites from five albums - Balls Rolling, All Natural, Getting High, The Circle and From The Heart - and two brand-new songs, Shawty and Man Down.
The album is 18 years of their best work with a glimpse of what’s to come. It’s a gift to the people who they say have made them who they are - the premier reggae band from Hawaii.
“For this album we asked, ‘How many songs can we fit on a CD?’” says Peni Pua’auli, the group’s lead vocalist. “And they came back and said 17 songs. So that’s what we did. I’m a record-buyer myself, but I refuse to buy a CD that only has 10 songs. I think that’s a ripoff. I think you should give the people what they deserve. Everything and all that we do has evolved because of the people, so we’re always conscious about our listeners.”
Rounding out the Natural Vibes ohana are Jehua Evans on bass and vocals, Kayton Macariola on percussion and vocals, Shane Abraham on keyboards and vocals, Stacy Medeiros on drums and Wayne Enos on guitar and vocals.
Born in the backyards of Kahalu’u, the Vibes continues to do music that’s true to them. Five albums and they’ve never recorded a cover song.
“We’re really stubborn on that because we believe, as artists, you are given a talent, and the people can truly see your talent for what it is when it’s original music,” says Pua’auli. “I think that’s why the band is so hardcore with original songwriting.”
As for their secret to staying together for 18 years, Pua’auli says they’re asked that question all the time, especially from up-and-coming bands. He answers, “A group that struggles together will stay together, we’ve proven that. But what really helps us is the people - our family and friends who encourage us to make our music. That’s what really gels the band together. We’re for the people all the way. They love us and we love them back every time.
“The outcome is 17 wonderful years. I don’t think there has been a year that I regret being in the band, and I think I speak for everyone else in the band.”
For the next few months, the Vibes will be taking their aloha to the West Coast, covering areas such as New Mexico, California, Arizona, Las Vegas and even Utah and Canada. They hope to hit the recording studios once they’re back and anticipate a release early next year. Also in the works are a few music videos and a DVD. Five hours, five bands, five bucks - that’s what Anna Bannana’s has brewing Sunday at its Beretania location. From 4 to 9 p.m., five of the island’s best blues bands will take the stage in an all-out celebration of the music they all love.
Friends of Adam, which recently opened for Sheryl Crow at Waikiki Shell, will give audiences a taste of what makes it one of the busiest blues bands in the state. Led by Clay Campania, the power trio also includes Ernie Ecraela and Justin Inocelda.
Tell Mama, featuring singer/keyboardist Alison Aldcroft along with her daughter Alex Lanning on vocals, drummer Gene Kois, bassist Mark Walker and guitarists Dale Machado and
Jim Barry, are also on the bill. Northside Art & the Mixers, a regular at O’Toole’s, knows what it takes to keep a crowd entertained. Their motto: Before you rock, go to The School of Blues.
Famous lead singer and harmonica player for Bluzilla, Corey Funai, teams up with guitarist and singer Boogie as the Corey Funai Blues Band. And finally, Chris Vandercook, a veteran guitarist and singer, takes the stage with local blues legend Mark Prados.

Serving up a different kind of sound is the Society of Seven. Back by popular demand, the SOS Classic returns to Hawaii for its 40th anniversary celebration with SOS Las Vegas at Outrigger Main Showroom.
Following three sold-out shows in May, the groups return for 8:30 p.m. performances from Wednesday, July 1, to Friday, July 3. And they finish up their concert with a Fourth of July performance at 6:30 p.m.
“The SOS Classic and SOS-Las Vegas anniversary performances were such a hit in May that we had to bring them back home to the Islands once again,” said Fran Kirk, executive vice president of Outrigger Entertainment. “We welcome everyone back to the Showroom for an exciting evening with two generations of Waikiki’s favorite entertainers.”
The two-band show includes outrageous skits, crowd-pleasing impersonations and a plethora of memorable Broadway hits. The groups top off the evening with a sensational finale ballad of This is the Moment.
