Celebrate with Pimpbot this Friday at Hawaiian Brian’s

Pimpbot celebrates its ninth anniversary and its second appearance at the South By Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) with an Anniversary Sendoff Party Friday at Hawaiian Brian’s Lounge along with special guests Missing Dave and Friends of Adam.

(guitar and back up vocals), Rylan Yee (bass), Eric Lagrimas (drums), Nick Ramos (trumpet and backup vocals) and Ray Farias (tenor sax) invite everyone 21-and-over to join them for an all-out good time. Doors open at 9 p.m. and showtime is at 10. Cover is $10 and includes an all-access pass to pool, ping-pong, darts, the arcade and games. Hosted by HawaiiNewsNow’s Ben Gutierrez, the evening also will include prizes and giveaways from House of Flys Waikiki.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been nine years of Pimpbot,” says Pacheco, one of the original members. “Time really does fly when you’re having fun, and on March 12 we’ll show you what fun is all about.”

With a recently added horn section, Pimpbot’s fresh sound has the band excited about what the future holds. For now though, mastering handfuls of new songs and a 2010 SXSW performance (March 18-19 in Austin, Texas, “the live music capital of America”) are about as much as they’ll be taking on for the month.

“It’s an honor to receive an invitation to perform at South By Southwest, one of the most important music festivals in the world,” says Lagrimas. “We’re looking forward to showcasing our new sound and checking out some Texas barbecue!”

Rebelution makes a Hawaii stop on its promotional tour for its recently released album ‘Bright Side of Life’

Rebelution will make the trek from its Santa Barbara hometown next Thursday (March 18) to Pipeline Cafe.

Opening for Rebelution is Hawaii’s Ooklah The Moc. Doors open at 9 p.m. and all ages are welcome. If you are under 18, though, you must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets cost $22 in advance at Pipeline Café, Hungry Ear, Hawaii’s Natural High, Butigroove, Holy Smokes, UH Campus Center and online at http://www.groovetickets.com.

For those who have yet to experience Rebelution, it is a grassroots reggae group with kick-back vibes, inspiring lyrics and positive energy.

Group members Eric Rachmany, Rory Carey, Wesley Finley and Marley D. Williams met in college back in 2004. They built good momentum and released their first full-length album,

Courage to Grow, in June 2007, which was selected as iTunes Editor’s Choice for Best Reggae Album of 2007.

It remained in the Billboard Top Reggae Album Chart for 36 weeks, peaking at No. 4.

Rebelution will be throwing out hits from this album, along with the latest tracks off its August 2009 release, Bright Side of Life ...

If hip-hop is more to your liking, head over to The Waterfront at Aloha Tower Marketplace the following evening (Friday, March 19) for the very first Hawaii appearance by Nas with DJ Green Lantern.

Hawaii’s hip-hop heavy hitters Tassho Pearce, Creed Chameleon, The Spacifics, Tempo Valley, Kavet the Catalyst and The Ground Up Pirates will share the stage with the headliner.

From 2001 to ‘04, Nas was on one side of the feud with Jay-Z, which included back-and-forth attacks in their songs. It was squashed a few years later when the two appeared on stage together for a concert. Since then, Nas has released Hip Hop Is Dead in 2006 and an untitled album in 2008. Coming soon is a much-anticipated collaboration with Damian Marley, Distant Relatives. The reggae and hip-hop album spotlights Africa - its culture, its people and its music.

Maybe Nas will offer up a sample at the upcoming Hawaii concert! For tickets, visit www.HonoluluBoxOffice.com, or head over to UH Campus Center or Prototype ...
