Google Speed Limit and about 57 million links pop up. Google 82Fifty and you get 419. This made changing their name from Speed Limit to 82Fifty a strategic business decision. And let’s just say they don’t have any immediate plans to change their name again, as all four band members have tattoos reading 82Fifty or 8250 on various parts of their body.
As for the name’s meaning?
“We’re all from Pearl City, and we all graduated from Pearl City, so it’s the Pearl City zip code, 96782, the last two digits,” says Jessie Campania. “And the 50th state. So we got 82Fifty.”
Made up of three brothers - Jessie, Richy and Jeri Campania - and one longtime friend, Max Paguio, who is referred to as their “fourth brother,” 82Fifty has blasted its way onto the music scene with its freshman album release, Take A Chance And Let The Music Play.
“The album is real personal,” says Jessie. “There’s a song about my daughter, a song about my real dad, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends. We’re writing about our life story.”
Their all-original album is a sampling of the songwriting talent distributed among the guys. From the beginning of their one-year venture in the production of the album, the group knew that having all original songs that represented them was a priority.
“Individually we start writing songs, but we just write it all together as a band, as we practice, and piece it all together,” says Jessie. “It’s a combination of all of us working together.”

What are your musical goals?
Richy: To quit work and just play music.
Jessie: What I want to accomplish is just have people enjoy our music. And just to have the whole world hear our music and love the music that we make. We don’t have to become rich or famous, as long as people enjoy it.
Jeri: My musical goals are to play the best music I can give and pretty much use music as my full-time job.
What is your happy song?
Jeri: My happy song is Good Day Sunshine from The Beatles.
Max: I think anything from The Beatles.Or the song that Jessie wrote for his daughter. It’s a little lullaby, and when he played it for us I was like, ho, that song is so happy. It just stuck in my head forever.
What CD(s) are you currently listening to?
Richy: System of a Down Jeri: I’m currently listening to Rx Bandits, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Dry & Heavy.
What is the best musical invention? Max: The drums. Otherwise I would-n’t be doing anything.
Jeri: The harp. Rumor has it you need to be a rocket scientist to even take lessons. Nah, I think all instruments are great - you can do so much with an instrument it’s unreal.
Richy: The guitar.
Who is your favorite musician to come from Hawaii?
Max: Jack Johnson.
Jessie: Yeah, Jack Johnson because he has his own style and he captured it.
Jeri: I’d have to say Jack Johnson. His lyrics and melodies just flow through his songs. It’s just like he’s talking story with us through his music.
Do you remember your first time on stage and what that was like?
Richy: My legs were shaking. I was like a sophomore in high school.
Max: For me, it was my junior year in high school and it was my first time playing drums in front of people, and the drums kept running away, sliding all over the place, and I was trying to chase it the whole time. That was kind of spooky.
What is your favorite song to sing in the shower?
Richy: Oh, the Sweater Song by Weezer. It just echoes in the shower.
Jessie: Mine is I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt. (laughs)
If you could go to any concert, what musician/performer would you choose?
Jeri: I’d pay top dollar if Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmy Hendrix were still alive. I just watch old clips of them on DVDs and I get goosebumps. The music and energy they let out is so powerful to me.
Richy: Aerosmith.
Max: Paul McCartney because he’s the last Beatle alive who can really sing.
