Hawaii News Now and Mountain Apple Company have released the DVD At Home in the Islands, the first documentary to chronicle the 35-year musical journey of The Brothers Cazimero.
“How it all happened and how it came to fruition was possible because it was the right time, and we were very happy to be a part of that production,” says Robert Cazimero. “We basically let them do what they do best, and we did our job: We did interviews, we gave them the music, we were there for filming. And it turned out beyond expectation.”
By popular demand, the documentary that premiered in September on Hawaii News Now is now available in stores.
The hourlong special takes you on the brothers’ journey to become pioneers of contemporary Hawaiian music, which began while growing up in Kalihi and attending Kamehameha Schools.
As part of a musical family, Roland and Robert’s first appearance on stage was with the family band Betty And Her Leo Alohas.
The Cazimeros have since expanded their onstage resume with concerts at Carnegie Hall, a 12-year run at the Royal Hawaiian Monarch Room and 30 years of May Day concerts.
The film captures their best musical moments, photo montages, never-before-seen archival footage and heartfelt commentary. It’s their story told through their words and mele.
“This DVD is an opportunity to relive and re-establish,” says Robert. “This has been the full life. We thought we chose the entertainment field, but we find out years later that it chose us. We find we are beholden to that, but also that we are lucky to still be here to keep going.”
Produced by Phil Arnone and Lawrence Pacheco, narrated by Kaulana H.R. Park and written by Robert Pennybacker, At Home in the Islands tells the story of Robert and Roland’s creative achievements, which include 37 best-selling albums.
Also on their list of accomplishments is their annual “A Cazimero Christmas” concert Dec. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at Hawaii Theatre.
“We’ve been doing this Christmas performance for about five years, and although that’s basically the theme, we do have a sub-theme, and this year’s concert theme is Christmas Is ... , which, for me, is everything that’s good, everything that’s merry and bright, and everything that’s touching and beautiful,” says Robert. “And that’s what we try to put on that stage, because that’s what’s great about doing a Christmas performance.
You share your memories while offering people the opportunity to add their memories as well.”
Joining Robert and Roland on stage this year are two family members, brother Rodney (”Tiny”) and sister Kanoe (”Tootsie”). Rodney will perform a Christmas song from his Na Hoku Hanohano-nominated album Kohala Moon. And Kanoe, Roland’s twin sister, will be a hula soloist.
“After last year’s cancellation (because of Roland’s hospitalization for a bout of pneumonia), Robert, Roland and I wanted to come back with a must-see blockbuster this year, and I think we’ve met the challenge,” says Burton White, Hawaii Theatre general manager and artistic director.
Robert adds, “We’re continuing to try to get Roland well. He’s getting better every single day.”
Leina’ala Kalama Heine will once again feature her signature hula stylings, along with Miss Keiki Hula and Master Keiki Hula for both 2009 and 2010. And, of course, Robert’s Halau Na Kamalei O Lililehua and the Ladies of the Royal Dance Company also will share their gift of hula.
A longtime friend of Roland, Robert and White, Loretta Ables Sayre, who recently ended her two-year Broadway run as Bloody Mary in Lincoln Center’s South Pacific, will be the special guest star in this year’s production. For tickets, call 528-0506 or visit hawaiitheatre.com ...
Congrats to Ten Feet! The group celebrated the birth of their new single, Auright, Oct. 29 and member Drez Delos Santos and girlfriend Season Lee welcomed their little girl Seanna Kana’ialani Delos Santos the day before.
“This is my first child. It only took me 40 years!” says the proud daddy. “Since I’m a surfer, I would describe being a new dad like surfing a 100-foot wave - an exhausting stoke!”
Auright first made its way to the radio waves on Island Rhythms 98.5 and was put immediately into heavy rotation.
“Our third album was released two years ago, and we felt it was just time to release some new material and let everyone know that we are still around,” adds Delos Santos. “We’re just doing singles right now. In fact, we finished two singles recently and will probably release the second one early next year. We’ve also got three extra songs that didn’t make the last album that we may release as singles, or we may choose to add them to the next album. So yes, we are eventually going to release a fourth album of all-original material sometime in the summer of 2011.”
