The Green Band Cultivates Debut CD

Making a CD - at least the way The Green Band does it - involves the same patience and care required to nurture a plant. It’s all about growth and cultivation. So after 10 months of love and tenderness, sunshine and water, the band sprouts its debut album The Green next week.
“The band respects and cares for the environment we live in, recognizing that we are all connected in this world,” says band member Ikaika Antone. “From recycled business cards to limiting the amount of plastic and packaging used on our album, we recognize that we are responsible for the decisions we make. It may cost a little more upfront, but it’s well worth it to do the right thing.”
The band’s name represents much more than an earth-friendly attitude. It also speaks of positivity and anything that makes you feel good, because for The Green Band, it’s about making music they all can love.
The foursome - Antone, Caleb Keolanui, J.P.Kennedy and Zion Thompson - officially reunited last April to offer the world an eclectic mix of music. Keolanui and Kennedy are cousins who grew up together in Kuliouou and have a history in our local music scene as members of The Next Generation. Antone and Thompson are childhood friends who grew up in Kailua and got their musical start in Stir Crazy.

Having grown up in the Hawaii music scene, The Green guys hope to use their backgrounds in reggae as a springboard for their music.
Their all-original album features 13 tracks: What Will Be Will Be, Love I, Never, Runaway Train, Alone, Dearest Sylvia, Wake Up, Alive, How Does It Feel, Love Machine, I’m Yours, Trod The Hard Road and Rootsie Roots.

Another band that’s on its way to maturity is Kilroy. Formed three months ago, the band has one focus: to play mostly original, catchy rock music throughout Oahu.
The story begins with guitarist Richard Barber. Upon moving to Oahu last year from Dubai, he posted ads to find musicians who shared his same musical vision. This is where Todd “TC” Anthony, a bass player from Waipahu, contacted him. From there, Anthony enlisted his fellow military colleague Claude Paddock on drums, and Doyle Purdy rounded out the group as its vocalist.
“We have some chemistry going with the music we create,” says Purdy. “Seems every time we meet to rehearse, something great happens.”
Kilroy recently went to Highway Recording Studio in Hawaii Kai to record four demo tracks. This is step one in the group’s New Year’s goal to eventually record a debut full-length album.
“I hope that our catchy tunes coupled with meaningful lyrics about real-life issues will strike a chord with some people,” says Barber. “We’re not strictly categorizable into any well-defined genre - we’re not metal, we’re not thrash, we’re not a cover band. We’re four guys who share an appreciation of driving riffs, catchy melodies and infectious rhythms - all wrapped up as hard rock.”

Just announced: Representatives from 4 Miles LLC, the Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) and Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) gathered at the Hawaii Convention Center last week Wednesday to announce the first ever Na Hoku O Hawaii Music Festival, to be staged May 27-30.
The four-day festival will include the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and the Lifetime Achievement Luncheon. It also will celebrate Hawaii’s unique culture through music, arts and crafts in workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and performances.
This unique celebration was made possible by a $150,000 award from Hawaii Tourism Authority’s $1.238 million marketing opportunity fund for programs that will help to stimulate short- and long-term travel to Hawaii.
