Back by popular demand, the Scene Choice Awards will again recognize the best bands and musicians that hail from genres such as metal hard core, indie, acoustic, rock and other underground talents of our state.
In its second year, the awards show will bring back the core elements such as live performances, celebrity guests and a huge crowd.
“This whole idea came out when friends of mine in the band Busekrus were nominated for a Hawaii Music Award, and I went to that and I was like, wow, it would be cool to have something here locally that concentrated on the genres that I see all the time,” says Jack Jackman, CEO of Nemesis Productions Team and member of the indie rock band I Digress. “I thought it would be good to get the local bands that I work with the recognition that they deserve.”
“We know that these bands are great because we see them all the time,” adds Jeremiah Tayao, operations manager of Nemesis Productions Team and Farrington High School graduate. “But there’s always a feeling that more people should know about these bands, so this awards show is a really great opportunity to showcase their talents.”
This year’s Scene Choice Awards happens Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. at 4Play Nightclub, and Jackman anticipates a full house. It’s all ages and cover charge is $7 at the door.

Performing at the show are Mantra, Shawn Davenport, Phoenix Rose, At The End Of Valhala,I Digress and other special guests.
“What we primarily want to do is get exposure for the bands, so we’re having bands play between each of the awards and we selected a variety of bands from different genres,” says Jackman.
In sync with last year’s format, the winners will be announced at the awards show and the voting is again done online.
“This year we did change the voting a little bit,” he says. “Last year you were able to go to the website and vote as many times as you wanted. This year it’s limited to voting one time. Also, last year it was for a month, but this year we’re going to limit it to two weeks.”

Chucky Boy Chock, the songwriting talent behind many of Hawaii’s legendary artists such as Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole, Kapena and The Brothers Cazimero, returns to the contemporary Hawaiian music scene with his ninth album, The Music Of Chucky Boy Chock, Volume 1.
Released last week, the album features the popular theme songs to the OC16 television series Hawaii Skin Diver, Sonny D in E Minor and Ta Pua Elama.
“Sonny D opens the show and Ta Pua Elama closes the show,” says Chock, a longtime resident of Kapahi, Kauai. “It’s been playing on the show for three years, and since they’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about the music, here it is.” In this new CD, Chock revisits songs he’d worked on in the past but were never released. He stays true to his canoe-beach-boy roots with touches of new age, jazz, Latin and soft rock.

“My songs are always at the moment and always an experience,” says Chock. “It’s always a privilege to have someone do your song. Before, I would have a hard time giving my songs away because I would always want to do them, but now I’m more willing to share.”
Chock also continues to compose and record Christian music. In fact, he expects his next Christian album to be out before the end of this year, along with an instrumental ukulele album.
“The ukulele album is to accompany a new coloring book that I did called Ocean Awareness,” adds Chock, who was born and raised in Kaneohe and graduated from Waianae High School. “The music is tied to the book and the book used real places on Kauai and teaches kids how to keep the ocean clean. And it features a crab named Ama.”
