Just back from bringing, or I should say banging, in the new year with family in Hilo - the ringing in my ears from all the fireworks should wear off in time to enjoy some great music lined up for 2010.
There’s more than cue balls and arcade games drawing the crowds at Hawaiian Brian’s Billiards. Its newly added club-type lounge is welcoming party-goers with events including Flash Back Friday presented by DJ Kutmaster Spaz and James Coles.
The ‘80s vs. ‘90s show goes off next week Friday (Jan. 22) from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Also featured will be the 808 Breakers and cool drink specials.
DJs Spaz and Coles will be playing music you remember from back in the ‘80s and ‘90s to create a cool party vibe that will take you (and them) back to the good old days.
Coles got his start in the DJ scene in the early ‘80s spinning at Cilly’s Night Club and Lounge. Spaz hit the DJ scene in the early ‘90s, also starting out at Cilly’s. Coles will spin hiphop, R&B and freestyle hits, including Sweet Sensation, Stevie B., Doug E. Fresh and Lisa Lisa, while Spaz reps the ‘90s New Jack Swing movement that included artists such as Bel Biv Devo, TLC, Heavy D and many others.
“We’re two old-skool cats who never really did spin at the same event because back then we had our own deal going on, so we came up with the idea about a year ago,” says Spaz. “And we’ll be taking it back and spinning on real vinyl with real records.”

Everyone age 21 and over is invited to attend. There’s no cover all night, and all-night parking available for $1.25 ...
Speaking of old-skool Djs: G-Spot of Double-O-Spot presents Chapel of Love 2010 at Pipeline Cafe on Sunday (Jan. 17). Old skool and nu-skool DJs will unite to create the ultimate musical celebration featuring classic techno, house, rave anthems, back-in-the-day hits and more.
Special guest Felix aka FLX, one of Hawaii’s founding figures of electronic dance music returns to the Islands for an exclusive set of old- and nu-skool house music.
Repping the old-skool bunch with G-Spot is James Coles, Daniel J, Ikon and KSM. Nu-skool DJs definitely dominate in numbers, and include Paul Brandon, Sam Ondarox, Technique, Soundsex, Errick, Micron, Scarrd and Cin.

The Star of Honolulu is upping the romance with its Five Star Sunset Dining and Jazz Cruise.
