“How come every time we play here it rains?” Kelly Boy De Lima joked while performing for a full house at Gordon Biersch on Friday, March 13. Toughing it out on stage through the wind and rain were Kelly Boy and his talented ohana Leo, Kalena, Lilo and Kapena - that’s right, their son Kapena made a last-minute trip home from San Francisco, where he’s attending college, to perform with his family for their CD release party. to let his three children perform a song without him, but not before joking with the crowd not to get used to it because he’s not going anywhere just yet ...
Speaking of veterans in the business, longtime Hawaii sensation Troy Fernandez is releasing a solo CD, Troy Fernandez, at the end of this month. The former member of Ka’au Crater Boys got his start performing before the group was assembled in 1990. His time on stage dates back to his days just out of Kaimuki High School in 1981.
About 10 albums later, Troy releases an all-original album that, he says, “Get lots of variety. There’s some that sound like Ka’au, some are country-western, some are pure reggae vibes, one is with strings and horns, one is kachikachi and one is a ska song.” And Troy can’t say enough good things about his two daughters, Tory and Tia, who sing background vocals on Track 10 (Down By The Ocean, Down By The Sea).

“They sing backup on this album, but they’re lead singers all the way,” says Dad. “Right now I’m focusing on helping them with their singing careers.” Also donating his vocals on the album is Keao Low from the group A Touch Of Gold ...
Kani Ka Pila Grille, located at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, just celebrated its grand opening last week Wednesday with a blessing, reception and live entertainment. This new gathering place honors the life of Gabby Pahinui and the local tradition of kanikapila. A slew of talented local musicians perform daily from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Taking the stage Wednesday is Cyril Pahinui, on Thursday it’s Kawika Kahiapo and Martin Pahinui, on Friday it’s Kaukahi, Saturday is Manoa DNA, Sunday is reserved for Mountain Apple artists such as Brother Noland and Troy Fernandez, Tuesday it’s Weldon Kekauoha, and on Monday Kimo Kahoano and his son Kamuela present the Pau Hana Monday talent search.
