Upcoming events include an art show starting Nov. 21 featuring local artists Newkon, Ckaweeks and Poncho. Stop by opening night and take part in a “blackbook battle” art contest that anyone can enter.

Also on the calendar: a Feed My Tummy toy show Dec. 1 and a grand opening celebration in mid-November.

According to owners Gavin Kobayashi, Kevin Mau, Danny Ganiko, Chris “Sherman” Wright and Gavin Cook, Prototype was opened with the idea of offering new and different clothing that was not yet available in Hawaii - clothing that would allow people to express who they are and what they are about. “We felt there was a void in the retail clothing industry in Hawaii. Everything was surf inspired/related,” explains Cook. “With all five owners growing up working in the surf industry in Hawaii, we all felt that we would like to take it in a different direction.”

At Prototype, you’ll find men’s and women’s clothing and accessories from brands such as Stussy, Undefeated, Foreign Family, Insight, Obey, Sneaktip, Kidrobot, LRG, Goodlife, FTB, Chunk and Ape, Gentle Fawn, Goorin, Tokidoki, Married to the Mob, DimePiece, Coal and Upper Playground.

The store also carries a huge collection of vinyl toys, cameras by LOMO, headsets and earbuds by A-7, as well as artwork and music CDs featuring local artists or artists with ties to Hawaii. Prototype opened its first store in Windward Mall from 2001 to 2004 before relocating to Pearlridge in 2006. The Pearlridge store is located Uptown, near Price Busters.

The Ala Moana store is located on the second floor near Nordstrom.
