Addressing the growing need for elderly day care in Hawaii, Kilohana United Methodist Church recently opened a new adult day care facility, Kilohana Senior Enrichment Center, at its Mahimahi Street property.
The 2,000-square-foot,air-conditioned facility can accommodate up to 35 people per day and offers a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to meet both social and recreational needs in “a safe, quiet and healthy environment.“It is the only one of its kind between Waialae-Kahala and Kuliouou Valley.
“Adult day care has become a critical issue for our community, and we wanted to offer a solution that helps address this need for families,“said the Rev.Alan Mark.“We built this facility so our elderly can avoid the despair of being alone during the day, and so their families can go to work and be free of worry.”
Mark hopes the center will inspire other community churches to offer a similar service.
Funding support for construction and programs came from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation as well other foundations and donations from the community.
The center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and is managed by Arcadia Elder Services and staffed by certified nurses’ aides. Fee is $60 per day. For more information about its services, call 754-7171 or visit www.arcadia-hi.org
