Kalani High School has booked one of its own - graduate and Hoku award-winning musician Bobby Moderow Jr. of Maunalua - to headline the entertainment at its 50th anniversary party and silent auction, set for 5 to 9 p.m. July 19 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.
“We want people to have a lot of fun,” said chairman Don Omura (‘85), but the planning committee could use some help with donations. “We have a memory book which will have photos and articles of happenings at the school over the past 50 years. We need an underwriter for the book, and we need advertisers to buy space in it.” (Ad deadline was May 31.)
The evening also features a slide show presentation with music of significant photos of the school, and even a snapshot of when the campus was under construction.
Omura, now the CEO of Total Resources Management, said he has good memories of the school. “I feel like Kalani has given me the opportunity to do what I’ve been able to do personally and professionally. I still live in the area (Aina Haina), and I’d like to see the school do well. I had some really good teachers there.”
Among Kalani’s well-known alumni are musician Weldon Kekauoha, fashion designer Anne Namba, bank executive Donna Tanoue, police chief Boisse Correa, Servco president Eric Fukunaga, and KITV news anchor and MidWeek columnist Pamela Young. Other Falcons in the world of athletics are Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Brandon Kop, UH football coach Cal Lee, former Pittsburgh Steeler Roy Gerela and baseball’s Len Sakata.
Dan Meisenzahl of KITV4, Omura’s classmate, will share emcee duties at the reunion with fellow Falcon Leslie Wilcox, the CEO of PBS Hawaii. Honorary chair is Bank of Hawaii executive Alton Kuioka, a member of the first graduating class in 1961.
Tickets cost $200 each, and reservations are due by July 1 to 377-7744, ext. 229.
Proceeds from the evening will support the building of a learning community center to assist students via workshops and partnering with local businesses. Funds also will be used to buy equipment to help resurrect the school newspaper.
