A unique partnership of Castle Performing Arts Center, Kaiser Permanente and Castle Health Academy continues to educate Hawaii’s youth the best way it knows how - through song and dance.

The Best Me is a traveling educational program initiated by Kaiser in 2007 to teach fourth- through sixth-graders about healthy living and good eating habits.

“It is all about healthy living, exercising and nutrition,” explained CPAC director Karen Meyer. “There is even a mention of diabetes.”

This school year Castle High students Rachel Wong, Falcon Aguirre, Sky Barnes, Gabe Wright, Noelle Victoria, Aaron Cameros, Issac De La Cruz and Connor Meers are delivering The Best Me message to Mokapu, Ben Parker and Kaneohe elementary schools.

“We had to do two shows at Mokapu because not all the students could fit in the cafeteria at once,” said Meyer. “We will perform at any school, public or private. It is a musical format and theme with song, dance and interaction.”

The show also gives the children an opportunity to learn about nutritious and healthy lifestyles in a unique and engaging manner, she added.

“The feedback so far has been wonderful. The elementary kids really look up to the high schoolers. It can be much better than their parents preaching at them or their teachers teaching at them.

“To have these high school kids come in and give them suggestions about healthy living really resonates.”

These performances also give the teenage actors a taste of what acting and performing demand.

“We have a small cast of eight rotating students; they travel and go to school - that’s what working actors have to do. So this is good for them too.”
