Tucked away inside the corner of a small Kaneohe commercial building is a hidden treasure where one can find, well, hidden treasures.

Island Antiques and Thrift Shop opened in April as a low-cost, more thrifty alternative to other, similar stores. The shop is run by two friends, Barbara Brown and Katherine (who requests her last name not be printed), who were former coworkers at an antique store in Kailua.

The shop carries an eclectic collection that includes aloha shirts, purses, koa bowls, Hawaiian jewelry, vintage fabric and tablecloths, English teacups, retro furniture, Fire King glassware and Ming’s jewelry.

“Barbara and I both have this love of collecting,” said Katherine. “And I think it’s a common thread that we have with a lot of other people.”

The owners’ mutual passion for collecting inspired the friends to branch out and start their own business in order to share their collections with others at an affordable price.

“I just love when people appreciate the old stuff and they know that it is of value,” Brown said.

Both women are considered well-established in the antique industry. Katherine has an extensive collection of the highly sought-after Ming’s jewelry; she also makes her own jewelry. Brown collects figurines and teacups.

Patrons will soon have even more to look forward to: Katherine may start jewelry-making classes, and the shop is currently working to expand its displays, particularly vintage books and Hawaiian items.

Since its opening, Island Antiques has offered marked-down prices on certain items - for example, jewelry at 40 to 60 percent off.

Island Antiques and Thrift Shop is located at 45-1127 Kamehameha Hwy., across from the American Savings Bank building. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 235-2233.
