Following two days of filming on the North Shore, production staff from Western Film Co. dropped by Kahuku High and Intermediate School last month and were treated as guests on a mock TV talk show.

Unit production manager Mary Courtney and production coordinator Jess Cole fielded plenty of questions from members of the school’s film club and the digital media class taught by Debra Barenaba. Following the exchange, they presented the Ko’olauloa Educational Alliance Corp. with a $1,000 donation for the Kahuku Film Club, and Courtney shared her take on the aspiring young filmmakers.

“I was very impressed with the kindness and enthusiasm of the staff and the well-mannered students’ intense interest in the film industry,” said the freelance producer, whose credits include 8 Mile, LOST, Twilight and Ghost Whisperer. The current project, with scenes at Papailo (Police) Beach, are for an upcoming movie about World War II.

“I was extremely impressed,” added film club mentor Don Sand, “to see such busy and successful film industry professionals take time for their day to talk to our students ... who produced the whole show. Their performances of oncamera hosting and questions were as good as Larry King or Oprah!”

The independent film company’s production office was based at Turtle Bay Resort for the two days of work on the as-yet-untitled project.

In addition to the $1,000 check, the film club also won a high-definition Sony camera last spring for Mean Words, a short piece on bullying for the ‘Olelo Youth Xchange video competition.
