Paliku Theater manager Tom Holowach’s goal for Phantom of the Opera is to give the audience as close to a touring experience as possible.

Opening Sept. 9, Phantom will run through Oct. 9 and possibly longer, depending on community interest. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m. for Sunday matinees at the Windward Community College venue.

Since the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical first opened in 1986, Phantom has remained an enthralling story centered around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daae, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius.

“People who have seen Phantom of the Opera have such autonomic memories,” said Holowach. “We have to deliver those things that they will always remember.” That includes the chandelier scene, he noted: “We are going to fabricate a huge, gorgeous chandelier which will be crashing down from our high ceiling (night after night).”

The musical has circled the globe and been seen by more than 100 million people in 149 cities in 25 countries. It was last done professionally in Honolulu in 1994 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. With master director Ron Bright at the helm, a talented set of actors and the skilled workers off stage, the Paliku production is projected to be a classic for the venue.

“I know we have the talent,” said Holowach. “The technical staff has been working their tails off, and our costumes are phenomenal.”

Many in Paliku’s Phantom experience are Windward residents, including ensemble members as well as Bright, Holowach, set and light director Sandy Riford, set consultant Jack Hufstetler, tech director Andrew Doane, stage manager Julia Ching; Doug Sheer, who portrays Firmin; Madison Eror as Meg, Brett Harwood at Maestro Reyer; also numerous ensemble players and costume designer Evette Allerdings, who flew to Las Vegas and New York to view costumes in the touring shows.

Sixteen professional musicians, directed by Clarke Bright, will fill the expanded orchestra pit, and a series of special speakers will be installed to reproduce the intricate nuances that make the show so unique as a musical.

Ticket prices range from $30 for children and students to $49 for premier VIP seats. For reservations, call 235-7310 or visit etickethawaii.com.

The Windward Arts Council will sponsor a gala Theatre Night with wine and light pupus preceding the Sept. 10 performance. Tickets for that benefit are $45 each, and reservations can be made by calling 254-4885.
