Komatsubara Receives Award

The late Walter Komatsubara, a client of Alan Chinen, was posthumously granted the Symetra Community Champion Award, which was recently accepted by wife Lillian and son Keith, for his contribution to the community. Komatsubara died last June, but had volunteered his services building and maintaining baseball fields for schools. He turned unsafe, weedy, rocky fields into fields of dreams for high school baseball teams and refused gifts or payments for his services. Symetra Financial donated $2,500 to Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation on behalf of Komatsubara. Symetra Life Insurance Company is based in Seattle and sponsors Community Champion Awards annually to clients of agencies that work with Symetra. A total of 86 gifts were collected and included clothes, toys, board games, bikes, scooters and more. In addition, 32 gift cards for McDonald’s, Times Supermarket, Taco Bell, Foodland and Walmart, to name a few, were donated. Pictured (from left) are Iris Fu, Tracy Yano, Shirley Chun and Tai Filo.
