About The Setting

MidWeek checks into the new Waikiki EDITION hotel for this year’s swimsuit issue and finds it to be, well, not your typical Waikiki hotel.

Lounging by its Sunrise Pool on a teak chaise or oversized daybed, guests can’t help but feel like a VIP vacationing in modern luxury. Located at the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Hobron Lane, and in walking distance to Waikiki Beach, The Waikiki EDITION is set in its own private oasis with creative design by famed hotelier Ian Schrager, who is often credited for introducing the “boutique hotel” concept to the world.

Recently named to Conde Nast Traveler‘s Hot List Hotels 2011, as well as its spa, The Spa at Waikiki, on Conde Nast Traveler‘s Hot List Spas 2011, The Waikiki EDITION debuted last October with a star-studded grand-opening celebration with guests Christina Aguilera, Vanessa Hudgens, Kevin Dillon, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Danny Masterson and others.

The highly stylized urban resort features 353 luxurious rooms and suites; the Private Sunset Beach and Bar created with more than 100 tons of sand imported from the Neighbor Islands and an infinity edge lagoon lined with custom-designed Yves Klein blue glass tiles; the Sunrise Pool with shallow lounging areas and chaises that appear to be floating on the water; a luxury ballroom for weddings and special events; a fitness facility; meeting studios, and the new MORIMOTO Waikiki restaurant by world-renowned chef Masaharu Morimoto of Iron Chef and Iron Chef America.

Behind the front desk in the lobby is a dramatic wall-to-wall surfboard installation by artist and former professional surfer Herbie Fletcher made from more than 100 collected broken surfboards from the sport’s best Pipeline surfers, including Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Nathan Fletcher, Bruce Irons and Christian Fletcher. Turn around and there’s a large, rotating bookcase that divides the lobby space from the Lobby Bar.

There also is the exclusive Crazybox nightclub open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, where celebrities Courtney Cox and Sean “Diddy” Combs were recently spotted. The club features a custom-designed suspended light sculpture with more than 40,000 reclaimed antique light bulbs, and a VIP section with its own discreet, separate entrance elevated above the dance floor. The lighting and sound system were designed by Clair Brothers, the concert tour specialists who designed Michael Jack-son’s final concert in London.

Adding to the experience are friendly employees and modern guest services, such as an individually designed Surf and Bikini Boot Camp with custom organic and vegetarian spa menus. Also, on the second floor is the Spa at Waikiki with four treatment rooms and a serene private couples room, along with a custom-designed nail salon with a full range of nail, body and skin-care services.

The Waikiki EDITION, which is managed by Marriott International, has a locals-only special of $199 a night for a city-view deluxe room and free parking. For more information, visit Editionhotels.com or call 943-5800.
