Folks poured into the Ewa Hongwanji June 16 to welcome in bon dance season. The festivities began at 7 p.m. and by 9 p.m., food prepared to feed a crowd of 1,000 had already sold out. The Kuhio Lions Club, presided over by Lion Rick Hoo, supplied the delicious meals. Meanwhile, Rev. Toyokazu Hagio of the Waipahu, Ewa and Waianae Hongwanjis was given a farewell as he prepares to move to the Big Island in August. Ernest Wakimura, president of the Ewa Hongwanji since 1981, and Namie Iwata of the Ewa Hongwanji Fujinkai women’s association, were also honored. “Normally the governor joins us, but she was out of state” said Ewa Hongwanji secretary, Keith Fukuda. “She’s a very staunch supporter of bon dance.”
