New Year’s At The Plantation Village

The eight ethnic groups represented at Hawaii’s Plantation Village introduced more than 200 visitors to a “celebration of rice” on Jan. 6. “The plantation workers all had rice in common,” said program developer JoAnn Fakler. “So, each group put out a rice dish that would have been served during the new year.” Guests had a chance to sample a variety of foods and watch cooking demonstrations. Children stayed busy with New Year’s activities, including Japanese games using tops and paddles. There were capoeira and karate demonstrations. The entertainment lineup featured Puerto Rican folk dancing and guides performing hole hole bushi songs that Japanese women used to sing while working in the fields.
