Starting Over With A Clean Slate In ‘10

In this space last week, I lamented the challenges of 2009 and looked forward to its imminent demise. Now, with the celebrations concluded, it seems only fitting to anticipate the potential wonderfulness of 2010.

First of all, I pray for the health and safety of my family. As long as they are in fine shape, both physically and spiritually, then my wish list for any year is substantially shorter. We had a couple of hospital visits this past year. I can’t think of a slower tick of the clock between when you bring your child into the hospital and when the doctor appears and says, “He/she is going to be fine.” Thank God they were fine, and I pray the streak continues.

I want to spend more time with my family on the Mainland. Check that. I will spend more time with my family on the Mainland. This was the first year in almost a decade that I did not see my side of the family for Christmas. I have to admit, it affected me more than I care to admit.

Women say they have a biological clock when it comes to motherhood. Well, sons have a biological clock when it comes to spending more time with your mom. I know that time marches on, and I just want to be in that parade as it passes by my mother. I calculated that over the past 10 years I have seen my family a total of less than six months. That simply will not do.

I am so desirous to see my beautiful wife’s dreams come true. She is a talented, dedicated, creative and resourceful woman who knows what she wants professionally in life. I have been witness to the peaks and valleys of small-business ownership. The high points bring a joy that is trumped only by the happiness of our children. The low points can be as dismal and as bleak as your imagination can take you. Such can be the roller coaster of entrepreneurialism and independence. So, for my wife, I hope for balance, stability and unimaginable successes for her in the new year and beyond.

As for myself, my New Year’s desire is to simply be. All I want is to see my children become good, upstanding young adults. I hope to be there to see Zack’s basketball games and to hear Zoe’s beautiful and infectious laughter. It’s my hope to help them with their homework and comfort them when their baby teeth fall out. I can’t think of a better way to start each day in a new year than to be surrounded by those I love and those who love me.

The beauty of a new year is the opportunity to shake the dust off from the old year. It’s a clean slate, a new ballgame, a new day. On average, we may have about 50 of these chances in our adult lives. It sounds like a lot, but how fast are these years flying by?

So, dear reader, I wish you a happy 2010, and here’s to the beginning of a fantastic decade.
