A Dedicated Nurse Finally Gets Pinned

Dear Pamela,
Back in 1970 my mom graduated from nursing school at Kapiolani Community College. At the time, she was a single mom with three teenagers and a small child. Money was tight, and she couldn’t afford the nursing pin awarded at graduation. She had a wonderful career and retired from Kapiolani Hospital before moving to the Mainland. She recently shared this story with my stepfather, Dalton Borchandt. He researched online and was able to get this treasure for her birthday.
The person he made contact with at the UH School of Nursing was Linda Kamioka. The department approval was granted and my mom received her pin at her birthday dinner in June. It is with sincere gratitude and blessings that I thank Linda for the birthday present that my mom so cherishes. The aloha spirit is alive and thriving at the Department of Nursing. Through their education of Hawaii’s future medical professionals, we are all in the best of care.

Dear Dee,
“It was a surprise request,” says May Kealoha, UH Nursing Department chairwoman. “We are proud of all our graduates and we’re so happy that Dee’s mom can now wear her pin on her lapel!”
Dear Pamela,
I could write a book about the inefficiencies and lack of customer service in business today. So when I experience good service it makes an impression, and sometimes a simple thank you is not enough.
I called Kaiser’s customer service to get clarification on my health plan benefits. Dora was courteous and not only answered all my questions, but she took that extra step to do some additional research and called me back with her findings. I’m glad your APPLAUSE column allows me to publicly acknowledge Dora’s efforts. I’m sure people like her will say they were only doing their job, but she exemplifies the best in customer service.

Dear Yvonne,
Dora Pulusila has been working in the Kaiser Customer Service Department for two years and loves her job. “The best thing about what I do,” she says, “is talking to people on the phone and being able to answer their questions. I love helping people, especially our senior members.”
