A Doggone Good Deed In Waipahu

I work the midnight shift from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. One night I went to work, not knowing I forgot to lock the driveway gate. I came home and saw the gate was open. I knew my dog had gone out, but I thought she would return. I looked around the house and she couldn’t be found. I went into the house and there were two messages on my answering machine. It was from an Officer Lewis of the Hawaiian Humane Society. He said a person by the name of Erika had found my dog. I gave her a call, and she said her boyfriend found my dog and brought her home. This was the third dog they’ve found. She was very nice. I had planned to give her something, but she wouldn’t accept it. I’m so grateful to them, and Fluffy is too.

Erika Irvine, a recent graduate of the Paul Brown Institute, says she and her boyfriend Arnold Carlos must be magnets for lost dogs. “He was leaving my place to go home and called, saying he had found a really big dog walking along the road. He brought her to my place and I remember thinking, this dog is so huge. We called the Humane Society, then gave her water and food. She had a tag, so it wasn’t difficult locating Robert.”

My family visiting from the Mainland and I received a beautiful aloha today in Waikiki. Alana, the parking attendant at the Ohana Waikiki Malia Hotel, noticed I had a flat tire as I was exiting the hotel ramp. I thought about trying to get to a service station to get the tire repaired, but Alana strongly suggested that I back up into a stall so we could inspect the tire. It was completely flat. Alana said she had worked at a car dealer before, and knew how to change a tire quickly and easily, and proceeded to do just that. She was so pleasant and cheerful during this and all the other interactions we had with her during our stay at the Malia, and she refused to accept the generous tip we felt she deserved.
I hope her employers recognize the value of this capable and friendly young woman! She made what could have been a big problem for us into a positive experience. I will definitely stay at the Malia when I next get a chance, and would recommend it to anyone! Thank you, Alana!

Dear Ellen,
“There was no way she was going to make it to a service station on that tire,” says Alana Knight-Boyce of Elite Parking Services. “She was going to call tow truck, but I knew she had to take her friend to the airport, and I didn’t want her waiting and then missing the flight. Afterwards she tried to give me a tip, but I suggested she use that money to fix her tire.”

After shopping at Kahala Mall, I arrived home with my grocery bags and realized that I did not have my purse, which contained my credit cards, checkbook, driver’s license, cash and checks. I immediately drove back to the mall and checked at the security office. To my relief and delight, I was told that a young girl had turned in the purse but did not leave her name. I am hoping I can find her so I can personally express my gratitude to her.
