Dear Pamela,

Our family would like to commend the outstanding service provided by the staff of the Board of Water Supply. We had a water leak and called the trouble desk. The person who answered my call walked me through to locate the main shut-off valve. When I couldn’t locate the valve, he sent someone to shut the water off. After I repaired the leak, the maintenance person returned promptly to turn on the water. He gave me some helpful hints on how to properly fix the leak and waited in front of our house to make sure there was no more leak. Unfortunately, I was not able to get his name when he left. Many thanks to these two guys. Their customer service is well above the standard.

Dear Albert,

The person who took your call was water systems operator Kerry Yamashige. Lead pipefitter Earl Watanabe actually responded to your call and made sure you were good to go.

Dear Pamela,

My wife fell on the way to Ala Moana Center and Curves. A man on a moped, a van and a bicyclist stopped to give her assistance. She was bloody from a cut forehead, mouth and skinned elbows and knees. She was wobbly, frightened and unable to get up by herself. These people stopped traffic, tended to her, called the police and an ambulance, and got her to Straub medical clinic. What she experienced was a continued example of the Hawaiian society that is very caring, respectful, polite, thoughtful of others and helpful. That is what we had seen in the four weeks she and I had been here. I do not know who helped her. But they did, and we are thankful to them.

Dear Allan and Jane,

Your emergency crew angels were Andrew Akana and Kelly Yamamoto. EMS District Chief Norman Hahn says, “They are both very caring and professional paramedics who shine as representatives of the City and County of Honolulu. We are always pleased when our patients express their gratitude about the excellent care they received.”

Dear Pamela:

We appreciate your column in MidWeek. It’s great the way you recognize people who quietly give back to the community. Here in Kaneohe, we have an older lady, normally nicely dressed with white slacks, who walks along Mokapu Boulevard, near the H-3 on/off-ramp, to Kaneohe Bay Drive going toward the Kaneohe Yacht Club. With a trash barrel on wheels, she picks up trash along the highway. Although we only see her on Sundays around 7 a.m., we’re sure she does it on a daily basis. She started out with just a trash bag, but her containers have been getting bigger and bigger. Many people talk about taking care of the aina, but we think it’s really

impressive the way she quietly takes care of business without any fanfare or recognition.

Dear Rudy,

Since we have no name to work with, we’ll put out the word and hopefully someone in your community can get us the name and phone number of your mystery trash collector.

(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
