A Good Deed Is Its Own Reward

Aloha Pamela,
Last weekend I blew a tire at Market City Shopping Center. In just minutes, three “angels” appeared and changed it for me. In fact, they were so fast I still made it to my doctor appointment. I did get their names, but I don’t know how to reach any of them. I believe they are students and therefore are not listed in the directory. I had no money at the time, but I do now, so I want to contact Mike Dela Cruz, Donny Dadiz and Moke Silva.
Jacque Parkinson

Dear Jacque,
If Mike, Donny and Moke are like most Good Samaritans, they will not be expecting a monetary reward. But if they do wish to contact you, they can do so through APPLAUSE (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)).
Dear Pamela,
We had stopped in Kailua before we were to meet our friend for dinner. When we returned to our car, it would not start. After trying many times, we finally decided that we needed to call AAA. The problem seemed to be the battery.
Just then Joe appeared and came to our aid. He got the jumper cable from his truck, was able to get our car started and we were able to be at dinner on time!
Thank you, Joe, from the bottom of our hearts. You were truly our guardian angel, helping strangers in need. We will always remember your kindness.
Walter and Kay Mita
Kailua
Dear Walter and Kay,
In these challenging times, one recalls the adage, “The best way to forget your problems is to solve someone else’s.” No doubt Joe is thanking you for the opportunity to do a good deed.
Aloha Pamela,
I am a third-generation manager at Highway Inn, a 61-year-old Hawaiian restaurant in Waipahu, a local restaurant with a genuine ohana atmosphere. It is not uncommon for customers to pick up the bills of others they run into here. Today, though, there was a customer named Yvonne Toyama who asked to pay for a table’s bill. I assumed that they knew each other and took the payment. After she left, I asked five-time Iraqi veteran OS1 (SW) Maka McCoy, who was in his uniform, how he knew this woman, and he said he didn’t; she just wanted to pay his bill. I think it’s these nice, little, unexpected acts of kindness that bring warmth to others and encourage others to pass on the kindness.
Regina Toguchi
Waipahu
Dear Regina,
Although Yvonne had asked that the attention not be focused on her, it was kind of you to share her thoughtful gesture with the readers of MidWeek. As you discovered, this was not an isolated incident. For angels like Yvonne, giving is second nature.
(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
