A Grieving Dad Offers His Thanks

On Feb. 23 this year, tragedy struck my family’s lives forever. My daughter Gillian was killed in an automobile accident in Mililani, and to top things off, I was deployed with the Air National Guard when this happened.
There are so many people I feel need to be recognized who came to help that night - of course, the Honolulu Fire Department, city EMS and the Honolulu Police Department, and most of all, the countless neighbors who live in the area who came to the scene to assist. Could you please relay a big “Thank You” to all? I do go to the tree where the accident occurred, and wish I could meet some of the neighbors who assisted that night, but I don’t know who they are. I feel that I have to acknowledge them somehow.

It is never easy working your way through profound grief. Gillian must have been a very special young woman. How kind you are to feel a need at this sorrowful time to thank those who responded to the scene.
HPD Capt. Ed Nishi says, “The incident happened during a transition between the third watch and the midnight watch. There were about 11 officers from the Wahiawa Police Station, and later traffic investigators. Everyone did their part. We are all very sorry for Mrs. Badua’s loss.”
EMS District Chief Norman Hahn writes, “We in EMS are always grateful when our actions are acknowledged. Unfortunately all of our people have been witness to the ending of a life. We continue to hope that people will learn from these sad events so that other families will not have to experience what the Baduas and other survivors go through. On behalf of the City and County of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Department, we would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Gillian Badua on this very tragic event.”

Recently after work I found significant damage had been done to my car when it was struck by another vehicle in a parking lot. I was devastated to find my front bumper hanging amid shards of glass from a shattered parking/turn signal light. Despite this being an unnerving event, things started looking up almost immediately! First, the driver of the vehicle was kind enough to leave her name and telephone number so I was able to contact her. Second, HPD Officer Grant Kimura of Pearl City Substation was efficient and professional in documenting the incident. Third and best, Messrs. Fukushima and Okabe of Fukushima Auto Center repaired my car quickly, economically and to my complete satisfaction. Thank you for allowing me to thank each of those mentioned above for helping to minimize my stress.
