A Helping Hand At Longs Moiliili

I went shopping at Longs-Moiliili, and my shopping cart was filled with a lot of heavy items, so I could barely push it around. I use a walker to ambulate. I had it folded up and stored upside down in the back of the cart.
When I was done shopping, I struggled to push the cart to the elevator. There was a tall, local man waiting for the elevator. He saw me struggling and pulled my cart into the elevator.
When we got to the parking area, he told me to remove my walker and then he pushed the heavy cart all the way to the ewa end of the parking lot. He waited until I caught up with him and he proceeded to load everything from the cart into my trunk.
I thanked him for his assistance, but he left before I could get his name. I just wanted to express my gratitude to this stranger who helped without giving it a thought.
May he experience the special feeling he generated with his act of kindness!

Your Good Samaritan deserves your APPLAUSE, but should you encounter the same difficulties, Longs Moiliili department manager Bruce Akau urges you to call upon a Longs employee. “Either a clerk or manager will gladly assist customers to their cars. Just ask a cashier and we’ll see that help is on the way.”

Aloha and mahalo for uplifting our spirits through the letters in APPLAUSE. There are some people I have neglected to say mahalo to for all their support and help. For over six years I have volunteered and taught ukulele and singing at the Wahiawa and Whitmore Park and recreation centers. Our group, “Hau’oli Na Pu’ukani,” appreciates all the sacrifices for us. We honor and thank the following: In Wahiawa, George, Elizabeth, Dahlia, Aaron and Fred; in Whitmore, Cheryl, Scott and Madeline. Whatever we have asked of them they have done willingly, no matter how busy they were. If you are looking for heroes, they are all among us, in our towns and communities. We say thanks and our many prayers will continue to be that all of you will be blessed with all the Lord knows that you need.

The staffs at Wahiawa and Whitmore are deserving of standing ovations, but you should take a bow as well. Hau’oli Na Pu’ukani is one of many community groups that support and enrich their neighborhoods with kupuna skills and talents. Your time and efforts as volunteers are much appreciated by your students, and you serve as wonderful examples of the aloha spirit.

In view of the way I have always looked at society where people can’t be bothered with another’s problems, John, a service attendant at BMW, has given me hope that there is such a thing as a Good Samaritan.
Just having finished lunch with his wife and child, John took the time to change my flat tire and took my spare to a service station to fill with air. This senior citizen wishes to thank him and his wife for their kind deed.

Dear Philip,
Your automotive angel was John McDowell, a technician at BMW on Young Street. “My wife had to take my daughter to the doctor, so on the way home they stopped by and we had lunch at Burger King,” says John. “I saw an elderly gentleman who needed some assistance, simple as that. I would hope that someone would do the same when we are senior citizens.”
