Aloha Pamela,

Returning to our car parked on the street by our church in Kaneohe, my wife Margo and I found our car’s glovebox open and papers strewn on the floor. It’s an instant sign that your car has been broken into. The bad guys also opened the trunk and took whatever was in there as well. There wasn’t much there worth stealing, but a lauhala basket, a coin purse, pocket change, document holder, maintenance records to our car, owners’ manual, a power adapter for a music player and some CDs were taken, and the car’s door lock punched in.

Two days later we received a call from someone who found the basket containing most of the stolen items. Richard Pontin searched through the recovered paperwork in order to contact us. He went out of his way and called continually until finally getting through. We are really happy to have these records back. Someone less neighborly would have treated the stuff as trash and just thrown it away. Richard’s our hero.

Dear John,

“I was coming home from a class,” says Richard Pontin. “The bag was in front of my neighbor’s house. I took it home and looked inside to find an address or phone number. I’m an ex-convict, and there’s a lot of people who think ‘once a convict, always a convict,‘but I know that I’ve changed. I have a wife and three kids to think about. I’m going to do good this time around.”

Bravo, Richard.

three star

Dear Pamela,

I would like to recognize and offer APPLAUSE to a dedicated City and County worker who works hard to keep Kalaheo park in Kailua clean and safe for our children. This park used to be an unsafe mess for 30 years. When my kids were small, I used to clean up all the broken beer bottles and felt so disappointed that care and respect for our aina was amiss. Mahalo to Jaime for caring.

Agnes Toma
Kailua

Dear Agnes,

The Kailua Park Complex says there is no one who works there named Jaime, but many thanks for your kind letter.

And in regard to your earlier letter, the folks at Kaiser Moanalua on the receiving end of your gratitude are Dr. Chris Johnson, nurses Unjeong Back and Jim Mahoney, Dr. Sameera Khan, Dr. Warren Tamamoto, Dr. Kalisik Roy and nurse Steve Clement, and also the palliative team led by Dr. Dawn Minaai and her group, nurse Sandy Kakiuchi, Chaplain JP and social worker Aileen Kaneshiro.

(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
