A Kaneohe Marine To The Rescue

I would like to extend my sincerest mahalo to “Greg,” a U.S. Marine stationed at Kaneohe. I had a flat tire just coming out of the Pali tunnel. It was a very frightening experience for this senior citizen who is not used to driving very far. The last time I changed a tire was years ago, and I was not sure how to do it. Greg and his wife pulled alongside and asked if I needed a hand. Did I ever! I did not even have the proper jack. Greg used his tools and changed my tire in minutes. I was so flustered I did not get his last name, but he mentioned just moving here from a base in North Carolina. Thank you to this fine young man for taking the time to help me.

This thank you is long overdue. My granddaughter’s pre-school had a May Day celebration, which included hula and a crowning of the May Day court. My committee was in charge of costumes. The last time I sewed anything was in 1972. Thank goodness the staff at Kaimuki Dry Goods understood my dilemma and pointed me in the right direction. They suggested fabrics that wouldn’t be too hot for the outdoor program; they led me to the Hawaiian wear discount counter; they showed me patterns for keiki. They didn’t make me feel stupid and, in fact, encouraged me in this challenging task. A big APPLAUSE to the ladies at Kaimuki Dry Goods!

Kaimuki Dry Goods is celebrating its 82nd anniversary this year. Owner DeeDee Miyashiro is a third generation KDG proprietor. “We must serve everybody who comes through that door,” she says, “no matter what level of sewing skill they have. My grandfather bought the store for my grandmother, and ever since the business has emphasized on service. It is wonderful to hear Ms. Tsunoda’s praise for our great employees.”

I want to thank police officers Kalahiki and Cazimero for their special courtesy in helping me in a mishap on the road recently. A rock hit my car window on the driver’s side and shattered it. After observing I was not injured, they removed the window glass and cleaned up all the pieces inside my car so I could get on my way. A sincere mahalo to both officers, who confirmed the great work our police officers do.
