I am visiting the islands and staying with friends. When I arrived, my friend gave me a beautiful plumeria lei. When it was time to do some grocery shopping I decided to wear it one more time. By this time it was a little limp but still had a lovely scent. As I was taking my purchases from the cart a lady came up to me and said “You obviously love flowers! I wanted you to have a fresh one,” and presented me with a beautiful white ginger lei. I was so startled. Her name was Violet Wong, and when she heard I was headed for the bus she offered to drive me home! I was so surprised and accepted. It was a wonderful experience of aloha!

“That lei was so sad,” says Violet Wong. “My middle name is Leialoha, lei of love, so leis have always meant so much to me. I saw her at Daiei and kept bumping into her in the aisles. I asked myself, what is fate saying to me? I went to the florist, bought a lei, and hurried to the parking lot. I didn’t want to intrude, but I introduced myself and gave her the lei. She was so charming. She was going to Kahala and I live in Kaimuki, so I was happy to offer her a ride.”
Dear Pamela,
I would like to send some Applause to the amazing staff at St. Frances West Medical Center. Feeling like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, I checked into preop, a bit nervous. I was immediately put to ease by Glenda the Good Witch, aka Rae. For a minute I could have sworn I saw her crown aglow, but later noticed it was a plumeria in her hair.
Nimfa took my blood, but was as gentle as The Lion. Lito, The Scarecrow, took all of my personal information, and had the brains to decipher what I didn’t understand. The Tin Man, with that heart of gold, was played by Carmen, who the day after my surgery, waited on me hand and foot. She has a special place in my heart.
Ann played a great Auntie Em as my anesthesiologist, and lauded me off to The Land of Oz with ease. With help from nurse Robin, I felt reassured and relaxed. Sister Pat added to the peaceful tranquility with a prayer before surgery and when I left the hospital.
The Mayor of Munchkinland, Dot, kept watch over me through the night. With the help of the Lollipop Gang, Myrna, Elena, Nicole and Arhlene, I was kept comfortable and content.
As for the “Man behind the curtain,” that was the great Wizard of Oz himself, Dr. Wiley Brunel. What a wizard indeed, and a great seamstress, I must add. Dr. Brunel was informative, attentive, and made sure I was up and running in my “Ruby Slippas” in record time.
As the curtain closes, honorable mentions goes to the Wicked Witch of the West, played by none other than my gallstone, the size of a kukui nut, and to Toto aka Hershey the Dachshund, who was waiting for me by the back door upon my return to Kansas (Kaneohe).

I don’t know what kind of anesthesia they gave you, but it’s reason alone to book a surgery at St. Francis West! Your cast of characters at the medical center includes Rae Villanueva, Nimfa Joannis, Lito Cayaban, Ann Waugh, Sister Patricia Schofield, Dot Nelson, Myrna Ibarra, Elena Aleta, Nicole Ah Sue and Arhlene Hedlund.
