A Neighbor And HFD Save The Day

I want to express my deep appreciation to our neighbor Jeremy for alerting the fire department when he noticed smoke coming from our home. My wife had left the stove unattended while cooking. If it wasn’t for his quick response, it would have been a catastrophe. Our home was not damaged and no one was hurt. And thanks to Honolulu Fire Department for its quick response. Much gratitude, Jeremy.

Dear Frank and Ruth,
HFD Capt. Terry Selig applauds Jeremy’s actions, but has this advice for anyone seeing fire or smoke in a neighbor’s house.
1) Call the fire department. Don’t assume someone else has called. An immediate call to 9-1-1 is essential for a rapid response.
2) Give any information you can to the fire department regarding the location of the fire and what is burning.
3) Alert others from outside the burning house. Pound on doors and walls, bang on windows, but don’t break them, yell and shout.
4) A Good Samaritan who attempts to fight a fire or perform a rescue must have courage and fortitude and make a quick decisions based on key factors: Is there a life at risk that you can save? Do you know what to do? Do you have the ability to do it?
Dear Pamela,
I would like to finally acknowledge Keiki Aloha Quilts! I was given two quilts while my twins were in the NICU at the hospital (they are now 2 years old!). My grandmother used to make and give away quilts to the family for special occasions. These quilts are treasures after she passed away.
It meant so much to get those two homemade quilts. It was like Grandmother had given them to me, marking the birth of the twins. The names of the quilt makers on the Keiki Aloha Quilts name patches have long faded off, but they still deserve big APPLAUSE because the group members donate their time and supplies to make these beautiful quilts they give away!
There is another part to this letter: Jessica and Ralph (born and raised in Hawaii but moved away due to his job) have a son, Skylar (1 1/2 years old), who is now at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota fighting cancer. I kept thinking, what to send them? Then it came to me. I would love to ask the group for a quilt and letter for Skylar. I know that the young family would surely feel the ALOHA they desperately need.
Thank you. APPLAUSE always reminds us of how there are still great people out there with ALOHA!

“We are all volunteers, about 50 of us ladies who meet at Waipahu Plantation Village twice a month to make quilts for 13 different agencies and hospitals. We donate 400 quilts a year. Our volunteers will be so happy to know that while the labels may fade, the memories still remain.”
