A Ring Of Aloha On The Beach

A big, heartfelt mahalo to three miracle-makers responsible for finding my wedding ring. It was lost deep in the sand on the tide-line at Yokohama Bay, where my sister Sue and I were enjoying a rare sunny day last month. Upon realizing it was gone, Sue and I dug up a huge area of the beach, while envisioning finding my precious ring and thanking our angels for helping us.
An hour later, tired and unsuccessful, I walked over to ask Dean, the lifeguard on duty, if he had a metal detector. He said no, but told me of someone who had one. I connected with Chris, who stopped what she was doing and immediately met us at the beach. Headset in place and equipment in hand, she scanned the area.
About 20 minutes passed; the sun was soon to set. Signals from the detector led Chris to find several pieces of aluminum before at last uncovering my ring. She held it up to the light - we hugged and jumped for joy! She said she really likes helping people get their lost treasures back.
I also deeply appreciated how my sister Sue stayed with me every breath of the way that day, digging, believing, persevering!
Let’s keep the beach and community programs alive and funded on our Leeward side so we may all continue to enjoy the beaches!

Dear Judy,
“It’s just a hobby of mine,” says Chris Severson, an educational assistant at Nanakuli High School. “But I’m happy when I can find something. My brother Danny is a lifeguard and my husband is a former lifeguard, so they know to call me when they see someone searching in the sand. Most lost items are sentimental, like Judy’s ring. I was really happy to find it for her!”
Dear Pamela,
Sincerest appreciation to the Good Samaritans who immediately came to the aid of my late husband’s companion dog when she was fatally injured on University Avenue. I was so shocked and heartbroken that I failed to ask names.
Mahalo also to the wonderful staff at Ohana Veterinary Clinic. They all knew Chibi and took good care of her.

“We tried to make her dog as comfortable as possible,” says Dr. Lisa Kam of Ohana Veterinary Clinic. “It’s very kind of Mrs. Suyeoka to thank us, but it’s part of our job to make sure pets get emergency services when the need arises.”
