I recently went to the U2 concert featuring Pearl Jam and was blown away by Eddie Vedder’s (Pearl Jam’s lead vocalist) rendition of Iz’s song Hawaii ‘78. As a young Hawaiian, it touched me profoundly hearing the words of that song at a concert full of out-of-towners. It showed respect as well as recognition of the native people and of our sacred aina. I hope it meant as much to everyone at the concert as it meant to me. Hawaii is so much more than a playground of beaches, bars and hotel rooms. It’s a people, a history and a life. So not only APPLAUSE, but a standing ovation for Pearl Jam. Ua mau ke ea ‘o ka aina ika pono!

Jon de Mello of Mountain Apple Co., which represents Iz’s music, agrees.
“My daughter was there and several members of my staff, and everyone was impressed. It kinda started soft and no one knew exactly what was coming. Then the audience connected with it and started roaring. Iz would have loved it. It would have blown his socks off.”
De Mello says Pearl Jam records all the concerts, so soon the band’s rendition of Hawaii ‘78 can be shared with everyone.

While traveling from Kapolei to Makiki I experienced a flat tire caused by a broken stem valve. I managed to get my car to the shopping center at Kunia and was fortunate to find Mr. Francis DeVorge and his Speed Stop Auto Repair crew leaving for the night. Mr. DeVorge dispatched three of his workers to check my tire and replace it with a new one. I was so relieved to be able to drive home, and I want to thank them for taking the time to help me when they were ready to go home.
In another incident I used the ATM outside Star Market in Moiliili. I failed to retrieve my card, but didn’t realize it until several days later. I called Star Market and, to my relief, someone had turned the card in. No name was left, but I hope the angel reads this and knows how happy and relieved I was. Thank you, whoever you are.

“Mr. DeVorge always puts the customers first,” says Brian De Borja, who, along with Norman Vida and Scott Agas, assisted you that evening. “We were closed already, but the lady had a problem and we knew we could fix it.”
Aloha Pamela,
Recently I intersected with a complete stranger who unselfishly helped me in a big way. I could only conclude that he had to be a guardian angel. While shopping in Safeway, I had reached into a toploading freezer to retrieve a ham. As I did so, unbeknownst to me, my bundle of credit cards, identification, cell phone and $170 in cash had fallen out of my purse into the freezer. As you can imagine, I was completely embarrassed when I could not pay for my items. As I left the store I was bewildered as to where everything was.
After a few hours of searching, canceling all my credit cards and turning off my cell phone, I was physically and emotionally drained. I wanted to give up the search, but something was telling me to call Safeway one more time. When I asked the clerk if anyone turned anything in, she replied “yes, we have it.” I rushed down to the store to retrieve my belongings realizing that the cash would probably be gone.
I was simply amazed that everything was there. The clerk said a gentleman who worked in the meat department found my belongings. I had a chance to thank him personally, but he did not want to accept the reward I offered, so I wanted to send out a big APPLAUSE to him in your column, which is the least I can do for such an unselfish deed. His
name is Darrin Sales and he works in the meat department at Safeway Kapolei. Many blessings to you and your family, Darrin!

“There it was, buried under the hams,” says Darrin Sales, who’s been a Safeway meat cutter for 24 years. “I lost my wallet once, and I know what it feels like. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.”
