I was driving my 73-year-old grandfather home to Makakilo from Pearlridge after his physical therapy session when one of my tires blew out just before the North-South Road/Kapolei off-ramp. I also had my 4-year, 2-year and 1-year-old boys with me in the van. My grandfather helped me (he just had physical therapy and couldn’t help much, though) find what I needed and I jacked up the van and started on the lug nuts, when a lady stopped to help us. She had on a PriceBusters name tag that said Tina, and helped me take off the rest of the lug nuts and get the spare tire on. The spare was a little flat, so she also led the to way the gas station to put air in it, always keeping us in view with her hazard lights on. She even put the air in the spare tire. I was barely able to get in a “thank you” and wave to Tina before she left.
I was hoping to give her something, so I’ve been checking PriceBusters with no success. If you could print this very big and grateful MAHALO NUI LOA to Tina, that would be greatly appreciated!

I just wanted to say thank you to the nice people at Longs Drugs in Mililani Marketplace, especially pharmacist Thomas Lynch, who helped me when I had to get used to new medicine or a different dose. He would take it upon himself to give me a call at home to ensure everything was correct. Never had I had a pharmacist do this for me before. I am 74 years old and things aren’t as easy to understand as they used to be.

Yesterday our Kapolei neighborhood was pierced by the sound of a little girl’s scream. It sounded as though she was fending off a dog attack. Due to an operation, my hearing is impaired. When I finally identified the sound, I rushed to the front door. However, within a nanosecond my son-in-law John was in the street barefooted and bare-handed, ready to protect the child.
It turned out to be a non-emergency, but I was so gratified that John and others like him protect our neighborhood. There were about 10 other residents who came out to offer aid. We need more people like this.

Your son John Oliveira says the non-emergency turned out to be heartbreaking nevertheless. “I was in bed with the flu,” says John. “When I heard the scream, I ran out in my pajamas and saw an SUV punching out of a driveway in reverse. The little girl, about 7 years old, was running after the car and screaming for her mother. I thought the mother was being kidnapped. The girl ran after the car for two blocks, which was still going in reverse. Then it swerved forward and sped away. Turns out that little girl is in foster care and her mother was visiting. I can’t put into words what I felt for that child. As a parent, it is inconceivable to me that anyone could leave a child in the street like that. My wife Michelle comforted her. I guess all we can do is offer our prayers.”
