A Sweet And Generous 16-year-old

I’d like to thank everyone who participated in my daughter Jazzy’s birthday party to raise awareness for Keiki Birthdays! She wanted to have a “Sweet 16” party that would help the homeless kids. Guests were asked to either bring unwrapped gifts or monetary gifts that will be turned in to the Keiki Birthday Program headed by Tammy Kubo. Keiki Birthday provide parties once a month for homeless kids in five different shelters. The event raised $1,620, which will purchase an inflatable bouncer that will help liven the monthly birthday parties on a continual basis.
There were so many people who contributed their time and energy for this cause. Vicigirl Productions, an events production company, helped to design the event in a way that explores how our younger generation can connect in positive ways through social media. Jed Roa and the Pipeline Cafe crew provided a supportive environment throughout the event. The entertainment was orchestrated by MC Roxy, headliner Natural Vibrations, Palama Settlement’s Play Skool, dance crew 808 Breakers and illusionary contemporary airbrush artist Daniel Morris.
It was overwhelming to see so many people donate their time and talents to a great cause which will provide some joy for the homeless kids on their birthdays.

The biggest round of APPLAUSE goes to your daughter Jazzy for sharing her birthday celebration with those less fortunate. How many 16-year-olds would think to hold a fundraiser for homeless kids? The Keiki Birthday Program still needs the generosity of the community. Founder Tammy Kubo says there’s a need for crafts materials, goodie bags and monetary support for the work volunteers do at the shelters in Waianae, Next Step Kakaako, Kalaeloa and Kauai. I know it’s a little late, but I would like to thank federal firefighters Chief Glenn Kaauwai, Eric Pratt and the team of dedicated men who came to bid farewell to a retired comrade, my husband Lewis E. Baker, in January of this year. You performed the most beautiful ceremony, and I was able to reflect on how proud my husband was to be a part of your team some years ago. Thank you all for sharing your time and special condolence to me and my family. You are always in my prayers.

Chief Glenn Kaauwai also wears the hat of the bereavement officer. “We are a brotherhood, which now includes women,” he says. “Every person, even after retirement, remains a part of our family. I actually met Lewis Baker in the mid-‘70s. He was at Barbers Point, a real team player who always spoke highly of everyone. It was an honor to celebrate his life.”
