A Tire-change Angel, A Found Pup

During the beginning of rush hour, my wife and I were heading home from the airport area on the H-1 toward the H-3. There was a flap-flap-flapping of one of our tires. We pulled over to the side and discovered a flat tire (on the freeway side of the car). I recently had shoulder reconstruction and was in a sling/harness which greatly hampered my ability to make the tire change. Along came George Salcedo of the Pearl Harbor Fire Department on his way to work. He pulled up, took over and had the offending tire off, the spare on and us on our way in what seemed like seconds. What a gentleman. There’s a lot of talk about the aloha spirit disappearing, but as long as there are folks like George Salcedo, we won’t ever be without it. Thanks a million, George.

George Salcedo says he’s the big winner of your chance encounter. “Gary was trying to change the tire with one arm. No way I was going to let that happen. I couldn’t see him going through the pain. It took very little effort on my part and I got to meet two wonderful people.”
Dear Pamela,
We want to thank the Good Samaritan who found our dog Honey Girl and got her from Pearl City to the Hawaiian Humane Society. One afternoon our gate was left open and Honey Girl escaped from our yard. Because she is a fairly quiet and mellow dog, we didn’t realize she was missing until after 7 p.m. After a panicked check of her usual spots, we saw the open gate. Our hearts sank. We spent all night until the early morning hours looking for her in every nook and cranny of Pearl City. We felt we might never find her.
The next day we checked with the Hawaiian Humane Society and it was a great relief to discover someone had taken her there the previous day. Our many mahalos to the staff at the HHS for their hard work and providing a safe haven for Honey Girl until we could be reunited. And to the person who found her, we would like to let you know how grateful we are. You spared us much sadness.

“How happy they must be to have Honey Girl back!” says Darcie Sharfenstein of the Hawaiian Humane Society. She says owners of lost pets will have a better chance of finding their animals with a new service on the HHS website.
“Found animals are photographed and their descriptions posted on the Web within hours of their arrival at the shelter. When an animal is returned to its owner, the closing of that record instantly removes it from the Web page, thereby keeping the information current. To view the new pages, go to www.hawaiian-humane.org and select Lost & Found.”
And of course, have your pet microchipped for easy identification.
