A Very Helpful Foodland Manager

Dear Pamela,
My children and I decided to go shopping at Liliha Foodland. While backing into a parking stall, my van hit the asphalt barrier. As I drove forward, the engine gave a loud rumbling sound. When I looked under the van I saw that the asphalt had pushed the muffler forward, which disconnected and knocked off the front pipe.

At a loss and stranded with my four children, I went to customer service at Foodland where the store manager, Mel, came out to inspect the van. Mel lay on the ground and connected the hot pipes together, which he said was a temporary solution. He said I needed to have that fixed. My brother-in-law Thomas kindly did so the next day.

I am very grateful for Mel’s help, and he wouldn’t even accept any tip! Mel saved me a call to the tow truck and all that hassle. Even if it was temporary, at least I was able to drive home. Mel deserves APPLAUSE for his unselfish act of kindness!

Betty Quach
Liliha

Dear Betty,
“She came in the store looking for help and I told her I’d take a look at it,” says Liliha Foodland manager Mel Alhambra. “As it turned out, the exact same thing had happened to me, so I figured out the problem and made a temporary repair. I was just trying to help. That’s my job as a manager at Foodland, to help out.”

Dear Pamela,
I filled my car with gas and left my wallet on the roof of my car. Remarkably, the wallet stayed put until I was halfway over the H-3, where it fell off. Lucky for me it was retrieved by a good Samaritan named Ron Bradbury, who proceeded to call contact numbers in my wallet. He refused a monetary reward, but he has my thanks for the effort.

Mrs. Carol McPherson
Hickam

Dear Carol, “Actually my crew spotted it on the H-3,” says retired firefighter Ron Bradbury. “We were on our way to do some masonry work. I’ve been in situations like that, everybody has been. I can’t take credit for it. That’s aloha, that’s Hawaii, that’s the way we are.”

Dear Pamela,

My sincere thanks to all the people who offered their help and were concerned for my wellbeing when I became dizzy after leaving the Kunia Orchid Show. My heartfelt appreciation to Sgt. Makon, Sgt. Emerie, Stacie Sasagawa, Mrs. Adachi, the ambulance workers, my brother Sam and all my friends (and some strangers) who were there.

After several tests at Wahiawa Hospital everything was found normal and I was released. May the blessings of the Lord be upon all those caring people.

Mildred Nishiyama
Wahiawa

Dear Mildred,
“I work for Del Monte, which staged the orchid show.” says Stacie Sasagawa. “I was walking across the parking lot when I saw some women trying to hold up another woman, who had collapsed. A Schofield medic got her some water, someone else got a chair, so many people helped. Mildred’s brother helped to coordinate the orchid show so we contacted him and an ambulance. We’re so happy she’s fine now.”
