A Very Well-handled Situation

Dear Pamela,

I was driving home from work via H1 eastbound when a vehicle in the next lane swerved and hit my car. This caused my car to abruptly turn and hit the divider and deploy my steering wheel airbag. With the airbag in my face and judging from the damage to my car, I can only assume that I hit the wall a second time on the opposite front side. The ride only lasted a few seconds and when it stopped my car rested on the right shoulder of H1. I quickly got out of my car, but before I could walk very far a man appeared making a cell phone call. I believe he was calling 911. He asked how I was doing and suggested I sit down. Before long, two other men stopped in their separate cars to help if needed.

Then in no time, police and ambulance personnel were on the scene. I was taken to Hawaii Medical Hospital West as a precaution to possible injuries. The whole scenario was extremely well-handled. One of the police officers was C. Gushiken, I believe. Unfortunately, I did not get the names of any other individuals. I am very grateful and thankful to all the folks who stopped to help. My car was determined to be a total loss, but I am doing great. Mahalo no!

Dear Ed,

Officer Christopher Gushiken was on the scene and your emergency crew consisted of EMT Ann Marie Ramos and paramedic Nicole Ota. District chief Norma Hahn says, “They are two of our best and brightest. We are always appreciative when the public recognizes the hard work and dedication that our employees display in the course of their duties.”

Dear Pamela,

We just recently returned from our winter vacation on your beautiful Oahu. On our first day, after we shopped for groceries, my husband lost his wallet - a very upsetting experience. We did call the police and had the credit cards put on hold, and tried to start our vacation as normal as possible. The I.D. in the wallet contained our home address in Canada and our son’s name and phone number in case of emergency, but no Oahu phone number.

Barbara, at her own expense, was kind enough to call our son in Canada and leave her phone number. Our son called us and said, “Someone found your wallet. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.” That was definitely an understatement because when she came to meet us with the wallet totally intact. She would not accept a monetary reward, but told us her husband liked the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. Since we own a sporting goods store, we wanted to give her a Red Wings sweater for her husband, but she would not reveal to us his size and said she did not want us to do that. When I said, “I hope something good happens to you, too,” she replied, “It just has. I have met you!”

Thank you, Barbara, you are a very special person. We are forever grateful for your honesty and kindness and you restored our faith of some people. You are a great example of “the best.”

Dear Laurette and Wayne,

Barbara, a retired federal worker, did not want to share her last name, but she’s tickled that you thought to write an APPLAUSE letter. “I did my best to track them down,” she says. “I even got on the Internet and finally reached someone in Canada. It’s just part of the aloha spirit.”

(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
