A Warm And Courteous C&C Crew

After celebrating a Wahine volleyball victory, my wife and I returned to our home in Manoa and faced a real MESS!! The sewer had backed up into the lower level of our home. A few non-productive calls to plumbers who advertise 24/7 service merely added to our frustration. In desperation, not knowing where else to turn, I called the Sewer Maintenance Section of our City and County. The first surprise was that a real person answered. Pearl said she would contact the maintenance crew.
About an hour later, to our great surprise and delight, a C&C crew arrived at our home. They diagnosed the problem, fixed it, then suggested ways to prevent recurrences. We were overwhelmed by the warmth of the crew’s personalities and their genuine desire to help us. I wish I had asked for their names because I don’t know who they were. In an environment where true customer service is becoming rarer, my family and I want to publicly thank the crew and the “dispatcher,” Pearl - all of them truly demonstrated the meaning of Aloha.
To these wonderful public servants, our sincerest MAHALO!!

Dear John,
The supervisor on the crew that came to your home was Benjamin Reyes. His posse includes Patrick Esteron, Barci Aila and Donald Suarez. Superintendent of the division, Florendo “Fuji” Juan, says these four men have heavy responsibilities. “They are the off-hours crew, so from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on weekends they take care of the whole island,” he says. “I’m very proud of them.”

Recently I discovered a really great outfit, the Assistance League of Hawaii. They run a thrift shop on Young Street. It’s small, but everything I saw was clean, very usable, and the few pieces of furniture showed quality. The head volunteer is Marti and in the course of my visit, her co-workers spoke of her dedication and non-stop work there. In today’s skewed value system, if you aren’t pulling down big bucks, you are denied recognition and appreciation. Then you get someone extraordinary like Marti, who still goes above and beyond. I know she would not like the attention, but this is just a reminder that volunteers deserve our respect even more than most CEOs!

Dear Ruth,
Marti Frensley credits Assistance League project chair Peggy Walker for the smooth operation of the program. “We have four different projects we’re working on,” she says. “We have a tutorial reading program for students, a national project called School Bell, in which we provide clothing for children in need, Operation Wildlife, which introduces fourth-graders to endangered species, and finally something called We Care, providing teddy bears, clothing and comfort to facilities for the elderly, ailing, children, sex abuse victims and military.”
