Dear Pamela,
We would like to thank all the people of Kaneohe and all Hawaii for all their kind aloha over the past two-and-a-half years we were based here. Thanks to all those who opened doors for us, even if it meant stepping out of their line or running down the hall. Thanks for holding their umbrella over the stroller. Thanks for warning me that I was imminently about to run over our stroller with the car. Thanks for picking up lost shoes. Thanks for all the fun conversations and the warm smiles. Thanks to the three men who caught my daughter falling down the stairs at Windward Mall. Thanks to the firemen in Manoa who got my son out of the locked van, and the firemen on the Pali who stopped by to ensure we were OK when I pulled off the street to check on the kids. And especially thanks to the five or six men (including two doctors) who helped get my son’s arm out of the door at Morning Brew in Kailua in September 2006. And last, but not least, thanks to our resident menehune who’s helped me find all the binkies and toys and even included a little mischief. We’ll miss you.
Mahalo nui loa.

Dear Jordan Ohana,
Hopefully your menehune made the transoceanic/ transcontinental hop with you to see the family settled in safely in Maryland. Fire Capt.Terry Selig thanks you for your letter. “It’s always nice to hear appreciation for our personnel,” he says. “They work hard and really care about helping those in need. I know they’ll appreciate hearing how they made a difference.”
Dear Pamela,
I took my wife and a guest to Ruby Tuesday in Mililani for lunch. We were seated in a booth, and across from us a lone soldier sat at a table. He smiled at me and I honored him with a salute. No words were passed. He finished his meal, told us to have a nice day and left. Right after that, the manager came to our table and told us that the soldier had observed the retired Army pin on my shirt and wanted to honor my service by paying for our meals. She said his name was Keith and that he was a regular customer at the restaurant. I was completely overwhelmed that a young soldier could be so kind, considerate and respectful to an old retired military man. I truly believe he deserves APPLAUSE.

Jolene Rediske of the Mililani Ruby Tuesday says Mrs. Sank came into the restaurant recently to let the staff know her husband passed away a couple of weeks ago. Mrs. Sank wanted to once again express her mahalo to Keith, who is stationed at Schofield but works out of Tripler, and let him know how much his gesture meant to her husband.
Dear Pamela,
Today a friend e-mailed me the link to “Appreciating Honolulu’s Finest.” Needless to say, I was blown away to see my name appear in your article. I would like to take this opportunity to say that good deeds like the ones citizens write to you about happen dozens of times every day, unknowingly to the rest of society. I’d like to thank Debra Shigemura for taking the time to write to you to express her appreciation. Not that we become police officers to get thank yous or APPLAUSE, but every now and then it sure is nice to hear that someone you assisted appreciated it. A big mahalo goes out to you for putting these letters in your column.
Officer Thomas Smith
Wahiawa District
Dear Officer Smith,
Serving the public is often a thankless job. People come to expect efficiency, expedience and courtesy from those who provide vital services to the community. Honolulu’s Finest do not disappoint.
(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
