Dear Pamela,
While camping in Haleakala National Park with my daughter, my altimeter watch fell off my wrist, but I did not realize it until I was setting up my tent at the Paliku campground. I could not find it, but the next day when hiking toward Holua campground my daughter spotted it hanging on the trail sign marking the Kaupo trail and Halemauu trail juncture. Whoever found it and placed it there must have been either someone who was staying in the Paliku visitor cabin or one of the park rangers.
In addition, when we hiked out I had to hitch a ride from the trailhead at 8,000 feet to the summit (where our car was parked). Many cars passed, but a family from Calgary, Canada, picked up me and another hiker and gave us a ride to the top.
Many, many thanks to all of those good Samaritans! It really added to a very memorable trip.

Dear Alan,
Your watch was probably found by a visitor, since the Haleakala National Park rangers have a detailed routine for lost and found items. “If the owner of the item is in one of our visitor centers, go up to the desk and ask if anything’s been turned in,” says park ranger Mick Goodness.
Dear Pamela,
What was a wonderful day at Bellows Beach turned out to be scary. I got stung by a Portuguese man of war on both arms - very painful. My uncle suggested we stop at the fire station. I would like to give a special thank you to paramedics Ortiz and Hayslip at the Waimanalo Fire Station for helping to relieve the pain on my arms from the stings. They helped calm me as I was panicking. They also gave helpful tips on what to do in case it happens again. (Hope it never does!)

Dear Xionei,
Mobile intensive care technicians R. Ortiz and R. Hayslip remember this incident.
EMS spokesman Bryan Cheplic says they were more than happy to help. “They both said Xionei was a pleasure to treat,” he says, “and they wish her a speedy recovery.”
Aloha Pamela,
While running on Center Street near Waialae my foot caught an uneven piece of cement and I came tumbling down. I was not hurt badly, but a cut on my knee was bleeding quite profusely. Manny Santos was driving by, stopped his car and asked if I was all right.
He had a cold soda can, which he wrapped in a T-shirt and put on my knee to keep it from swelling. He called my daughter on his cell phone. This from a complete stranger! I thank Manny and give him APPLAUSE for coming to my aid.
Gloria Sena
Kaimuki
Dear Gloria,
Manny is happy you were back on your feet within minutes.
“I was going to work, doing some landscaping for a yard in Palolo, when I saw Mrs. Sena fall. I was glad I had an extra soda!”
