Averting A Shopping Trip Disaster

My wife and I went on an all-morning shopping trip to Pearl City and Pearlridge. After several hours, my old legs were about to buckle and my chronic hernia was hurting. We completed our shopping and returned home tired, but happy.
While changing my clothes I was shocked to notice that my wallet was missing! We searched our car, shopping bags, retraced steps. Nothing! I hit the panic button! I imagined all the terrible things that could happen ... a bad person could steal the money and use the credit cards, but also could steal my identity and create a financial monster that would destroy my family!
My wife noticed our answering machine blinking. It was Kalei of Pearlridge Longs. She said I forgot my wallet at the checkout counter and wanted to know when we could pick it up. I was so happy, I could have hugged Kalei. We rushed over and thanked Kalei, who refused to accept any reward. I am so thankful to her for her kind and thoughtful action that might have averted a possible heart attack to an 85-year-old man. I only regret that in my excitement I forget to ask for her full name. God bless Kalei and all the staff at Pearlridge Longs!

“Actually another customer found it,” says Jodean “Kalei” Ohelo-Oyama, a Longs cashier for nearly 17 years. “My friend Travis happened to be in line and noticed the wallet on the counter. I knew immediately who left it because the Yamamotos were in my line a few minutes before. They both came down to the store and thanked me personally. They were so sweet!”

I love to read in this column all the stories of people who care. One Sunday I had gone to church, then to Mililani Marketplace. I noticed that one of my rear tires was flat. I got the jack out of the trunk and removed the hubcap when a couple approached. The woman told her husband to prepare to get his clothes dirty. It was so nice for them to help me. I only got their first names, Rodney and Janine. I’ll be 70 years old in August. Thank you for being so kind.

Mililani Marketplace customers in a similar situation don’t have to count on Rodney and Janine or other kind-hearted strangers to give them assistance. “We are there for anyone with car trouble or security needs,” says Phoenix Security president Louis Siracusa Jr. “Our guards can be identified by their khaki uniforms with the black epaulets. Just flag one of us down and even if we can’t help you directly, we’ll put you in touch with someone who can.”
