Dear Pamela,

While transferring money between credit unions, I dropped some cash (a large amount for me). When I retraced my steps, I couldn’t find it. I reported the missing money to University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union and Hawaiian Tel Federal Credit Union and went home, chalking it up as a loss and wondering how I would pay all of the month’s bills. Just as I parked, the phone rang. Machiko Mann had found the cash, and turned it in to the University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union. What a nice surprise! In these financially difficult times, how wonderful that honesty and kindness are alive and well. Thank you to Machiko and the helpful staff of the two credit unions.

Dear Alyce,

“Alyce Dodge, a member since 1992 came in to make a deposit only to discover she only had a portion of the deposit,” says Jeanine M. Morsem, president and CEO of the University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union. “Machiko Mann, also a member since 1992, came in that morning and told our receptionist, Judy Crawford, that she found some money by our front door. We called Alyce to let her know that Machiko had found her money. We have wonderful members, as you can see by Machiko Mann’s actions. I truly believe that Machiko is very typical of our members ... very caring, very considerate of others.”

Dear Pamela,

You’re right!! ... “items lost ... items found: a renewed sense of faith in humanity and a determination to keep the kindness going.” MidWeek 9/28/11

Last week, I met my brother and sister-in-law for “talk story family” time at Zippy’s Waiau. Returning home, I realized my wallet was missing. After frantically searching yes, my husband even checked my SUV because I’m loose-brained lately I called the restaurant and some kind, honest soul had turned it in. What a relief ... my wallet with my ID, Medicare and medical insurance cards, Visa and other cards and cash were all intact! I wish I could thank you personally no name was left, but I think it was a “senior” person(s) because there were so many seniors having lunch in the same area. You will be blessed! Mahalo.

Dear Lorraine,

“We at Zippy’s Waiau are happy your story has a happy ending,” says manager Richard Chong. “We frequently find items left behind, and our standard procedure is to notify the manager or office clerk, who keeps it safe. If there is an ID, we make every effort to contact the owner. Our staff is very straight-forward and helpful to all our customers. It’s just a normal part of service here.”

Dear Pamela,

I was having coffee at Starbucks-Kamehameha Shopping Center and placed my purse in the back of the chair. In a hurry to get to a baptismal at Kamehameha School, I forgot to take my purse. When I arrived at the school, I realized that I did not have my purse and quickly looked for a phone to call Starbucks. The purse was gone and no one turned it in to either Starbucks or shopping center security. I put a hold on my phone and my First Hawaiian Bank credit card. While speaking to the agent at the bank to report my card lost, she informed me that a charge was made at Times. While on the phone with her, a charge was trying to come through for Longs. She was able to deny that charge. I called HPD to fill a theft report. I just wanted to let your readers know that if something like this should happen to them, you need to act quickly. But most importantly MAHALO to Conrad (Longs manager), Officer M. Lum (HPD), FHB customer service and the gentlemen at Starbucks for helping me. So far, no happy ending to this, but a big APPLAUSE to these wonderful people.

Dear Darnell,

“We are sorry that this happened, but it is good to hear that there were helpful people who responded to the situation,” says Maj. Bill Chur, commander of District 5. “Officer Matt Lum is a very competent and dependable patrol officer. He has a track record of maintaining excellent relations with the public and demonstrates a high level of sensitivity to cultural diversity and individual needs. He is a positive asset to District 5, and his recent commendation from a member of the public comes as no surprise.”
